I flew garuda buisness last year. They were fantastic! They have really turned around their airline (saftey concerns seem to be a thing of tha past as well).
I'd go with Garuda if their fares are alright; if not, Jetstar is probably the better bet with the more spacious aircraft (and in J, they have a footrest).
Garuda would be the way to go if not into the Budget Carrier or Narrow Bodied Plane Options and they are proven.I did it years back with Qantas and after the horror stories I heard about GA from friends who went direct from Adelaide I got the better deal.I am not sure how much has changed since 2000 but if anyone here has done the trip since Jetstar took over from Qantas do let me know.I went ADL-SYD-DPS and the same back home and it wasn't too bad.Even for the sector homewards It was a factory fresh only a few months old 747-400 back to Sydney.
There are now DPS nonstops offered ex-ADL on both JQ and VA, albeit on narrowbody aircraft; but the convenience of the Jetstar flights can't be beaten, with JQ127 ADL 1845 DPS 2120 and JQ128 DPS 2220 ADL 0605+1.
Garuda is a great airline, and since they revolutionized their fleet with 777-300ERs, their overall safety rating has gone straight up. If Garuda has a reasonable price, I think they have the edge.
From memory when I did my trip back in 2000 I got with Qantas the 767 on the way over and the 747 home.I admit these days with the VA 738 Even though I have not done this trip yet It would be a huge improvement on the old 747SP's and 747-300'S That used to exist on this sector back then.
He was worried about overall safety of the airline, and since they had their 777-300ERs, the whole airline seems to have gone up in their safety rating (I guess it's due to training). They use A330 flat beds to DPS, which are fine.

The 77W is great, Alvin, apart from the fact they don't fly it on SYD-DPS.

It's a domestic economy seat for six hours to Bali.

It's A330 on the GA route between SYD/DPS...
And I agree on the general sentiment - no issues with safety these days :)

No they pulled out some years ago as it's largely a leisure market.
I believe VA will eventually do the same and sub in the Tigerair bus for their own. Apart from leg room, there's not a lot of difference.

QF don't fly to Bali at all. It's only Jetstar or a competitor these days.
