tronixstuff is correct.
Essentially what your friend wants to do is transfer his mum's status to his booking, presumably to up his chances for a successful upgrade.
Unfortunately, frequent flyer status is not transferable in any circumstances to protect the integrity of the frequent flyer system.
However if his intention is to syphon points from his mother's account to upgrade on his own merit, the policy for points transfer apply. However if he is a Bronze member and the sector in question is a popular one, the chances of an upgrade is slim. There is a cost associated with points transfer and points transferred typically cannot be returned without a cost. So think carefully before going down this path.

His mum can transfer him points so that he can request an upgrade but there are no guarantees. This also assumes he's not on a Red eDeal fare that isn't upgradable.

His mum, on the other hand can log into her Frequent Flyer account, and opt an upgrade for his ticket...using her points.... his ticket will be Upgraded based on her status, but he will not get the status. if that makes sense?

She will need his booking reference number, and surname.. then she can opt an upgrade on his ticket, using her ff points... i do this quite a lot for my immediate family.

Thanks for the tip highflyer!
I didn't realise that Qantas allows status to flow through. I wish Aadvantage has that rule too!
