Works fine. I have used it in South America and HK as my back up card in case my bank plays silly buggers with my credit card use when I suddenly turn up in strange countries (despite prior notice). It was accepted at a department store in Ecuador when my HSBC cc was rejected.
Easy to load up, it has pay pass and a great little dedicated and, in my experience at least, reliable app.
It's my go-to card for travels – I use it pretty much everywhere, as well as in Australia on a day-to-day basis. I make sure there's enough in the Aussie account and then just transfer to whichever 'virtual wallet' I need to use. Keep the Aussie account topped up and the app or any Web browser will let you instantly load up that foreign currency account to cover large payments like a hotel bill.
I have used it for cash and debit card without any hitches. I now only use it as a way of fixing the exchange rate for a holiday. Otherwise I use a credit card with no forex charges. The minimum 3.5% benefit is more valuable than any of the perks offered on other cards.
The only place that "rejected" the card, and it became useless after that, was at the Novotel Auckland Airport, to pay for "extras" on checkout of the hotel.
Lucky I had another card at the time to pay for incidentals.
A very good tip from Andrew, above – I avoid using any card for hotel preauthorisations, prefering to hand over large denomination notes such as A$100, US$100, some €50 or £50 notes – anything but the the local currency, as that's meant for spending, not locking away in the hotel safe until the day I leave! (As it happens I no longer use credit cards, having many years ago moved to only debit cards, and many hotels won't even take a debit card for pre-authorisation anyway.)

I am planning on using it for an upcoming trip to Europe and wanted to know if it works as well as any other travel card and if the app functions ok.

99.9% of the time, for me, it works very well.
The only place that "rejected" the card, and it became useless after that, was at the Novotel Auckland Airport, to pay for "extras" on checkout of the hotel.
Lucky I had another card at the time to pay for incidentals.
Left a bad taste in my mouth after!

EXCEPT: don't use it for preauthorisations with regards to hotel stays.
They can take 28 days or so to refund the $ to your card, where as other cards can be immediate or 4 days.
