I have seen on various articles, people just love spamming the downvote button on comments which hurt no one and are asking an innocent question, just because they might be a bit behind in terms of knowledge they get downvoted and people reply with sometimes rather offensive messages, and more pointless comments like "Good Job" getting 38 upvotes.
It's not neccesarily that the comment is good or either bad. If the first few people downvote then it starts a chain reaction, same can be said for high upvote comments.
RK - Next to downvoting do you also comment / explain why you do not agree? Personally I enjoy reading othe people's views, it is good to be open minded. Giving funded arguments / stating why one sees things differently in general adds more to the debate than just a downvote (or upvote for that matter).

Why do people on AusBT downvote a lot?

Agree, both these comments will serve as case in point.

I'll downvote if I don't agree with a statement or if the question/comment lacks knowledge. However, I'd never downvote just because other people are.

I'm sorry, can you expand on how a question can lack knowledge?! That's the point of a question, because someone wishes to further their knowledge...

Yep! Just remember, if you save up a thousand points of ausbt karma, you can trade it in for jack.
It's almost as valuable as Delta Skymiles. Heyoooo!

Theyre just numbers, no need to overthink it or take it personally.

To be fair, AusBT readers also upvote a lot too :)
