Why are Qantas Rewards seats for J class so few and far between? I'm trying to find any MEL/SYD to LAX and nothing available except for the domestic connections....

A few reasons.
1. It's a very popular route for premium travel, so not many seats are made available as the airline can sell them for full cost.
2. There are a huge amount of people with lots of QFF points to burn and therefore they all get snapped up almost immediately as soon as they are released 11 months out.
3. The redemptions are also open to all other OW carrier FF programs so that makes it even harder.

Correct. LAX is the worst route for award seats.
Might I suggest to the OP to investigate routing via Asia.

If you are looking far enough out (ie around 350 plus days) you will find them - particulary through Brisbane and also some Hong Kong options. The key is planning.

Status helps and they always seem to find an award seat for my wife when I am travelling and paying J even on LAX/LHR sectors.

"...nothing available except for domestic connections" - really, you don't want to transit domestically to get a FF flight to the US? Not sure if I have a lot of sympathy for you.

Might I suggest that the OP might be referring to the instances of award flights showing, "You flight from Brisbane to Los Angeles will be in Economy."
