I was calling Cathay a few or so ago. Waited 25-30 min. Got through to someone said hello and the line cut out. Another 30 min later was able to speak to someone.
The call back service is surprisingly good and I've always gotten a call back in 15 to 20 minutes. (I'm 'QC Bronze' so they're not giving me any preference on the phones anyway).
As someone who's worked with this technology behind the scenes I'd suggest you fell into one of the many holes of no progress whereby the technology can keep adding you to the back of the queue.
This situation isn't unique to Qantas...Try calling a telco? try calling Australia Post?
It would seem from the comments from other posters that the call back service is the way to go...
A Premium customer is Buisness and first class passengers then FF who yes have a seperate line or airline picks up that by your registered Mobil number.at present a first class passenger paying up to $32,000 for 2 people to London gets put on hold ,I don't think that is right.the majority of FF gold and platinum fares are paid by companies anyway.and yes you become gold after one return 1st class trip.

Qantas does. The number for Platinum FF's is different to Gold FF's - I just checked my LTG card and my Platinum card.
This is further validated via the entry of your FF number
