Usually started by someone dying /dreaming to have a particular carrier(s) to start serving a particular city due to some kind of personal preferences unrelated to mkt realities....

There was a rumour a few years ago of a carrier, assumed to be JL, starting flights to MEL. Turned out to be JQ going to NRT.

There are also rumours of either JL or NH starting flights to PER. This seems doubtful for the at least the short term. JL has limits on where it can open routes for the next year or so due to its tax payer funded bail out and NH would need more aircraft. Both would be waiting for new AU slots to open up for HND.

"...NH would need more aircraft."

For which it has been steadily taking delivey of new widebodies  almost every mth for the past few yrs and planned to continue till @ least 2019.  Even if we ignore those 779 x20 + 388 x3 arriving NH fleet fm 2019, there're still 787 x36 + 77W x6  awaiting delivery to NH all within the nex 3-4 yrs.

To launch any new AU routes, the lack of longhaul fleet capacity will clearly be among the most minor issues facing NH.

"Both would be waiting for new AU slots to open up for HND.."

Unless they do the unthinkable(In the minds of some folks I guess...) known as NRT where plenty of prime slots have been staying vacant for yrs now.
