Why has'nt non point to point flying has'nt taken off in Oz? Compared to the U.S, where this seems to work fine (do not know the finer details), our airlines do not want to look into this option at all? for eg: MEL-CNS can stop at MCY on the way or SYD-TSV can stop at Ballina or MEL-CNS at Hervey Bay etc.
The US has population spread across many many cities and regions making it economically feasible to undertake this type of routing - we have the eastern seaboard, Darwin, Adelaide, and that place over west...
A lot of the non-point to point flights (i.e. via Southwest) are into non-hub airports - San Jose, Newark, Portland, Las Vegas LA Reagan, Chicago Midway etc - much lower landing fees...
The US has a massive college, and college sports market - so lots of flyers bouncing around through secondary airports
Outside of our golden triangle, we just don't have the traffic to warrant sectors (and the associated extra costs) for flights that might go Melbourne Cairns with a stop in Mackay...

BNE-PER could stop at Alice springs/Ayers Rock?
What are your thoughts?
Just so I get this right. You want to spend a longer time travelling and with the added inconvenience of stopovers, instead of going non-stop point to point?

Agree - Sydney to Townsville with a stop in Ballina - somebody stab me now with a fork!
haha, i understand why you guys are not too happy with the suggestion and i like your thoughts. Obviously, i'm not saying every flight has to have a stop over. If there were (hypothetically) 3 flights in a day from MEL-CNS, one could do a stop in one of the regional centres? This way the traffic to that regional town is serviced both ways. I totally agree with the landing charges, but if the councils see the benefit, they may come to the party?

I see where you are coming from. It is a chicken or the egg situation.
Is there adequate demand between such pairs or will the demand be grown, when such routes become available?
Also are the main airlines making enough money milking existing routes, or do they need to service more remote locations to drive sales?
That second question goes to the heart of the competitive aviation landscape in Australia, of which there is limited. The US being a bigger market will always result in more players, who consistently will need to refine/define their service offerings to stay in the game.
Not as crazy at it sounds, VA are the only one to fly direct SYD-TSV anyway, QF are all via BNE, so whether it stops at BNE or Sunshine Coast, Ballina, Gold Coast is irrelevant.

Jetstar also flight Sydney to Townsville according to google.
That's true, I was referring to the main airlines, I think JQ run four days a week or something, VA used to so a TSV - OOL service years ago, they currently don't have a TSV - MLB service so if they ran a service via OOL it would probably make the service more viable.
