I have just booked award travel with AA SYD-LHR in J class, which takes me SYD-HKG on QF117, then HKG-LHR on BA32.
Couple of questions:
1. I am QF platinum so can I access the QF First class lounge in Sydney by showing my plat card?
2. again same question for the CX first class lounge in HKG?
3. its $130-170 to select a seat on BA32 A380 - but I read its free if you are OW emerald (as I am), would BA accept this if I called them, despite being booked on my no-status AAdvantage account as a reward flight?
You might be able to get AA to update the FF details on the reward booking to your QF one, and in that case, the OW emerald status benefits would be applied to that booking.
I've not done it with OW since I always book with QF, but I've booked through VA on DL and updated my FF to AZ since that was SkyTeam Elite Plus.

Appreciate anyone's advice/experience
Get the Ammadeus PNR for the booking. This would be the QF and BA PNR.
Then go to the Finnair or Royal Jordanian website and change the FF number on the booking from your Aadvantage number to the QFF number.
Log in to the booking on QF and BA's manage you booking page respectively. Confirm that your QF FF number is now recorded. If it has, you're now able to select seats for free.
This eliminates the problem of status on BP not matching status/number on the emerald-grade account. Since this is an award booking, front load your admin so you won't have to deal with it on the ground.
