I am travelling to New York from Perth and looking at how I can do the trip on Star Alliance. Am currently Gold Status with Aegean and have more than enough miles for a reward business ticket. PER-SIN-FRA-EWR with Singapore Airlines is one option, any other ideas? Thanks.
yes, I'd go Perth to Auckland and then onto Houston on Air NZ. You'd then just face a short flight in "the friendly sky" with United! But the Air NZ flights are great if you get the Dreamliner from Perth and look for the good connections. Air NZ business on the Houston flight is nice - kind of business "plus". I do that leg 4 times per year now from Perth.
Good luck finding any reward tickets on Air NZ business... I searched around 15 different flights across a couple of months and only once found an Air NZ flight between Perth and the US (with the PER-AKL flight in Economy).
As mentioned I'd try Singapore airlines but again business rewards are few and far between.
Another Option is Thai Airways and connecting through Japan but you'll end up on a United flight from Japan to the US.
I'd play around with the United website and when doing searches click on the award travel to get some ideas on availability (but do note the United website won't ever display Singapore Airlines flights).
Probably try to avoid South African Airways as their PER-JNB route uses the very old A340 and dated product with 2-2-2. You'll get a much better experience via SIN or AKL.
Thanks all for your help! I noticed booking through United offers the option of PER-HKG on Cathay, then HKG-EWR on United. Short layover, but sceptical about the 777-200 Polaris Business. It is in a 2-2-2 layout so it's certainly not their new Polaris product. Any experiences to share re United Business Class?
1 stop limits you a little via Star Alliance for the latest and greatest.PER-AKL-SFO-JFK OR EWR USING A COMBO Of NZ AND UA for the internal sector within the USA.It would be nice if a one stop to New York existed via Star Alliance at the moment but sadly nothing there.

Another option is PER-AKL-HOU-LGA with Air New Zealand and United. Otherwise I'd say the Singapore Airline flight is a good idea.

Air NZ via AKL onto one of their flights to the US - NYC leg will likely be on United. If you're not in a hurry you could via Europe.

the only one stop option on star alliance would be south african airlines, via Johannesburg
then you could even mix a safari
also note that Singapore don't generally open up all their award space to partner airlines especially on the A380
