Hi guys, looking at booking a trip in December and would like to have your opinions on the best hard product J class flying out of SYD to anywhere in SE Asia direct. End destination is BKK but happy to take 1 stop for a more enjoyable journey ;)

My top 3:
1 - SIA - to SIN (B777-300 and A380)
2 - Emirates - direct to BKK (A380)
3 - Qantas - direct to BKK (A330-300 - can someone confirm?)

Suggestions? Opinions?

Vietnam 787 business is very good (to Ho Chi Minh city or to Hanoi), not sure about connections to BKK

I heard that Garuda has improved a lot, but haven't taken one myself.

An interesting one to ponder. Out of Sydney, I'd stump for the Qantas A330 'Business Suite' unless you could get onto a Singapore Airlines Boeing 777-300ER with the airline's latest business class (IMHO, this is way better than the A380 business class).

Ah yes have recently just flown Vietnam on the 787 which is a good product for the price, thanks for the reminder! And no, i haven't flown Garuda either but according to the latest Skytrax it does appear they've improved leaps and bounds in the last few years. Thank you!

Thank you! Yes, i'm very keen to get on both the new suites (QF and SG) so they are on my list. Have done Emirates before so i know what i'm expecting. In your opinion (if you have flown all 3 on my list) which would you rate at 1, 2 and 3?

Garuda is amazing - would happily fly with them any day. VN is my new unsung (cheap) hero after flying them to HK via SGN - very good hard product and soft not bad at all. I recently did Air Asia X via KL as it was so cheap, I was really, really impressed. The seat is 2-2-2 and only 2 rows and one of the old fashion slanty seats with a lot less space but solid for the price. Not top of my list but be open minded. TripAdvisor has airline reviews and you can find every airline on there, including filter for business class which has been helpful www.tripadvisor.com/Airlines

I'm a big fan of the Emirates bar but EK419 arrival time in BKK is around 1am so don't forget to factor in schedules.  You get the limo service with Emirates though.

Cathay with the A350 are the best option at the moment, as good as Qantas First class with edible food.

Arrival time in BKK is not a question. Sometimes it can take a quarter of the flying time to get from the airport to the hotel. A late night arrival means that road traffic will be quieter.

Garuda is definitely on my list due to price. Have flown VN recently and although hard product is excellent on the 787 and A350 - however their entertainment selection is seriously lacking!

Thanks guys, Garuda is definitely on my list due to price. I liked VN and have flown their 787 and A350 in J and the hard product is excellent however their in flight entertainment is sorely lacking so that puts them down a couple notches.

Another option which i saw is BA to SIN but i've read/heard horrible stories about their business class product. Can anyone confirm?

Cathay is also good, but i've heard their A350's need some re-fitting? Have flown their 777-300ER in J which is excellent and i believe they use a similar product on their A330's flying to SYD but then again their pricing compared to "similar" hard products puts them back a little (in my opinion).

I personally love flying THE BUSINESS on virgin australia. Granted, this is out of Mel and would need to fly Syd-Mel-HKG.

I flew this recently and love the route. It even makes the one extra stopover worthwhile.

Ok, so i have settled on China Southern flying the A380 (SYD-CAN-BKK and vice versa for return) on their new 1-2-1 business class seats with a stop in Guangzhou. Their ratings on Skytrax seem to give an impression of excellent service by reviewers and i think they've come in under the radar a little so was keen to give this a try. Plus they came in pretty good value for money for direct all aisle access.
