Hi all, I was just reading the article on here about American Airlines having a sale on FF points and was wondering if I bought some there how easy is it to transfer to Qantas? Also is there any restrictions on using them after or would it be a straight transfer into my Qantas account?
You cant transfer points from one program to another. you can however use american points to buy one world award seats and this includes seats on qantas
American points are better value that Qantas ones.
A lot of OneWorld flight awards are significantly cheaper (both in terms of points and dollars) from AAdvantage account than from QFF, for the same flights. That includes flights on Qantas itself.
If anything, I'd love an opportunity to move all my Qantas points to American.
If I buy a flight with Qantas using AA miles do I still get my Qantas FF points for the flight?
No, unfortunately not - guess we can't have it both ways. What we usually do is book one paid flight direct with the carrier and the other with AA then one of us has good FF status and can "guest" the other.
Also, since AA do not book on Virgin or Emirates and are stopping bookings on Etihad shortly (and booking Domestic Flights on Qantas is uneconomic) I am cutting back on buying points from them until we have a trip to Asia or somewhere we can fly on an airline like Cathay, Singapore or Qatar. Choices are narrowing down!
All Airlines are watering down their points value. Tried to book a flight recently to Dublin on QF in October (low season) and QF want 330k points return!! Granted it covers the fees, but used to be around 128k points plus about $600 for SYD-LHR. Might use my points now to buy wine instead :(

Your AA account must be 30 days old before you can buy miles
