Im thinking of booking paid J class BNE to LAX in VA the business (cheapest J fare type). I believe the direct flights earn 120SC each way.

If I fly via SYD or MEL will the positioning flight BNE-SYD/MEL be in domestic business class (I assume not)? and how many SC will I earn for the domestic leg?
Many thanks for your help

If you book it all on the one ticket as a J class fare to LAX, then the BNE-SYD domestic will certainly be in J. Why would you think otherwise when you have purchased a J ticket?? You will earn points and status credits for each of the two sectors - BNE-SYD and then SYD-LAX.

There's a saying: "Why fly direct when you can fly indirect?"

Many of us regularly fly indirect to reach our SC goals faster and at a lower cost per SC.

Thanks that’s great. I will fly via MEL to maximise points - platinum for the Mrs I expect. Also to try the Etihad lounge.

I also realised these flights can have a free stopover which works perfectly as we planned a week in Victoria at that time anyway!

Yes I regularly fly NTL to BNE for international and sometime domestic rather than driving to Sydney when it's practical to do so. You will earn SC for each leg (40 + 160 if going to Sydney) but the rates for the domestic leg are the international earn rate.

For example BNE to SYD in business would be 40SCs on the international itinerary rather than 50 or 55 on a domestic itinerary.
