As a Velocity Platinum, is it possible to somehow call up and request the free Economy X seats I'm usually able to select as part of Platinum?
Yep it is possible you just need the VA PNR which Singapore Airlines shoule be able to give you.
I have to do this all the time when booking VA operated but NZ operated flights across the Tasman. Oddly the one I booked last night automatically had 3C assigned within about 30mins of me booking without any further action.
