Completely agree that cabin baggage is way out of hand. The thing that annoys me most is the people who don't take of their back packs before boarding and then sashay down the aisle, knocking everyone in an aisle seat in the head with their oversize back packs!

Turkish airlines asked that when boarding backpacks are taken off your back and held on your front. I thought that was most sensible.
The point everyone is forgetting is that these passengers want to get off and exit out of the airport in a hurry rather than waiting at the carousel. This is why they carry such big bags into the cabin. The self check-in doesn’t help either as no one is there to police the size of the bags.
My pet hate is paying excess baggage charges when I travel with scuba equipment then seeing other people carry much greater amounts of excess baggage on board for free while I keep my carry on bag to the required size.
On a trip to the US in November last year after a couple of domestic flights in First where the overhead locker was full of economy bags/carry on and my small carry on was put in the hold, I decided to take action. On a flight from SFO to ORD my overhead locker was full, I asked nearby passengers in First if they were their bags, when they responded 'no' I removed the bags I needed to make space and left them in the aisle. The owner soon strutted down the aisle from way back in the plane and complained loudly about my actions. I pointed out that I have paid to fly First and that I deserved to have my bags above my head for the flight. The FA soon arrived and took the other guys bags and put them in the hold (no charge). Other passengers in first clapped and congratulated me on taking action. I see a number of parties at fault - the airlines and flight crew for not enforcing the rules about bag size and weight; passengers who clearly take far more onto the aircraft than they should (but as they know they will not be stopped, they feel they may as well flaunt the rules) and the producers of the movie 'Up in the Air' who highlighted the 'wasted' time people spend at baggage carousels! I find with any issue on a plane (or elsewhere in life) if one speaks nicely and clamly it is generally resolved in your favour.

I’m not a big fan of crew bags left on the first two rows of economy and sometimes even in business.

Almost a full time game/challenge in the UK/EU. Use priority to get on early and 'claim your space'...!
