I'm traveling from Perth to Las Vegas next month, will by flying in and out on a Friday, will have a PE booking (am a Gold FF). Does anyone know which city would be the best chance of a points upgrade to Business? I could leave via SYD, MEL, the most convenient would be the 787 flight from MEL (as the same plane departs from PER), and return via either SYD, MEL or BNE, I'd be happy to give up a bit of convenience on the ground for a better chance of an upgrade in the air.

Generally flying out of MEL would give a better chance than out of SYD, but it does depend when you want to travel and how popular that flight happens to be. Flying out Friday is a popular time to fly.

BNE is on the 747 still so the best upgrade chance might be from there, but again it does depend on how popular the particular flight happens to be.

I would try Brisbane as the plane is bigger and will be soon downsized to a 787. Pick the days that a single 787 will replace the 744. That 744 is more likely to have lower loads but it is a matter of luck as well.

I tried coming back via BNE in Feb, the plane was packed, no chance of an upgrade. Have booked on the 787 to/from MEL will see how I go.
