I've done Sydney several times, and melbourne only a couple... can't say either or is any different really. Sometimes it depends on the time of day, and the Customs/Quarantine experience. The terminals itself aren't bad. In Sydney you just have to grab the QF connecting shuttle from Intl to Domestic, but you are able to check your bag through before you have to get on the bus. Melbourne, you pretty much walk from the International Terminal over to the domestic terminalright next door... both a little walk, which never hurt after a long flight across the Pacific

I find the domestic QF lounges, in particular the Business lounge, in Sydney slightly better (and cleaner) than in Melbourne. If my connection was longer, I'd prefer to spend the time in the Sydney lounges.
In terms of ease of connection and queues at immigration/customs, it's much of a muchness. If you're not flying with an Australian biometric passport, make sure you get a fast track pass from the cabin crew.

I would say MEL hands down. I always find MEL customs & immigration faster than SYD. Plus domestic departures is a 50m walk from intl arrivals in MEL, whereas it is a bus ride in SYD. Finally, SYD is more congested, so flight delays are more common, inbound and outbound.

Always Via Melbourne for me.One time coming home from Singapore it took me 40 minutes to clear customs and immigration then get over to domestic for connecting flight onto Adelaide and was a lot better than what I get at my home town airport. No strip searching of you or your luggage by comparison.ADL international on arrival is like the Prison Series Wentworth by Comparison!!!.
