I’ve never flown enough to get close until this year. Between work and holidays and mostly flying Qantas I now need only 4 flights and 120 status credits by end of February next year. I’ve already booked return Melbourne to Adelaide and Melbourne to Auckland. How many more similar flights do I need to earn the 120 status credits? I might have the opportunity to fly to Hamilton Island or Tokyo later in the year. Any advice on status credits?

Flying to Auckland and Adelaide, are you flying back from these places? That could help as well. at least then you'll have your Sectors guaranteed to be ticked off

Jetstar is an oft-overlooked pathway to status, if you can attain cheap fares and add status-earning bundles to your booking.
P.S. Congratulations on your journey to status, everybody on AusBT has started where you are. Hope it works out for you! :)
If you want to fly/have to fly to Narita/Haneda, don't fly the Japan Airlines 787 from Melbourne or Sydney, use a domestic connector from Melbourne to Sydney overnight, and then the Qantas from Sydney/Brisbane to Narita/Haneda.
Flying the Japan Airlines 787 from Melbourne can be done, and Japan Airlines is part of OneWorld, but you will earn less flying a partner airline, better to fly Qantas.

MEL-NRT direct in Business will get you 240SC or going via Sydney will boost it to 320SC. Silver in one trip :)

Take care in booking Jetstar, as not all Jetstar flights attract status credits.
