Hi All, Am new to redeeming qantas frequent flyer points and need advice. I have 110 thousand qff points available plus a 450dollar travel credit with wantas. My wife, daughter (under 2years) and I are planning a trip from Australia (brisbane or other) to Montreal, and was hoping to use points for one persons return fares. What is the best/smartest way to do this where I get best value from my points. Which airline is best?, Do I pay half cash half points or do I bite the bullet, save my points and pay full fare to get status credits and more points for other future travel plans? What would you do? Thanks kindly in advance for suggestions.
The short answer is to shop around and see what offers are there. If you are close to Gold then think about going for status credits for yourself. But do note that status credits are not transferable so maybe use the points for the spouse and child's awards ticket but then that would tie you with Qantas if you want to travel together (Qantas is the most expensive with extra fees etc) . If you did that you may not seat together unless you have a helpful check in person.
You'll find plenty of articles on AusBT re best value redemptions. From memory points + pay is a pretty diabolical ROI.
Australia to Canada is somewhat competitive so I'd be inclined to patrickk's advice and look for a deal - if its a Qantas deal, make sure you check the T&C's to confirm you'll earn status credits
One of the big failings of the QF booking system is how you can’t allocate different payment methods against different travelers on a booking. You for example could allocate points for one of the fares and use your travel credit towards your paying fare and earn status credits and FF points. I have noted this on any survey QF send me but as yet no changes, some have advised you can ring the call centre after making two separate bookings and have the points booking amalgamated with yours for seat allocation etc so that might be an option but have never done it myself.

I've done it and it works well. You call the Qantas call centre and ask to "join" the two (or more) bookings and they'll ensure that you're seated together etc.

Me too - I regularly use my points for my family’s tickets and pay cash for my ticket so I accrue. Call centre has always been very helpful.

Buy a return sale fare to LAX. Use your points to fly return from LAX to Montreal.

Don't waste the points on economy class ticket as the fuel surcharge can be as high as ticket when it's on sale.
