Transiting through Jakarta OR Manila through 2 separate itineraries (have to cross immigration?) - Qantas & Jetstar

Hi guys - Hope you are well! I am looking to travel to Europe from Australia transiting out of Jakarta and Manila. I am an Aussie citizen and wanted your help on a couple of topics:

1) If I have 2 separate itineraries on Oneworld (lets say QF on SYD-CGK-SYD) and (CX on CGK-CPH-CGK) - can I have a thorough check in at Sydney airport itself? Or do I have to go through immigration and again check in at CGK (both ways)

2) If I have to go through immigration, can I get a multiple entry visa on arrival in Indonesia? 3) Lastly, is it safe to transit through CGK (know the answer is .....'It depends' ...but any guidance is welcome)

I am open to transiting through Manila as well - so am open to traveling from either cities. Appreciate your help on this Cheers, Swap

Qantas will only through check to oneworld carriers if one of the two tickets is an award ticket. So on the way out of Sydney, you'll be required to enter Indonesia (or your chosen transit country).

Cathay Pacific will through check luggage to their interline partners (and the list is extensive even carriers like SQ and AF are on the list). I'd assume it's the same from CX->QF but a year or so ago I did a transit from CX to AF in Paris and in Hong Kong had my boarding pass printed as well.

In regards to the Visa. Australian passport holders (and 167 others) are entitled to 30 days visa-free entry into Indonesia which you are eligible to use even if just in transit for a few hours. No Visa is required!

Whilst I don't think anyone can comment on the safety of a particular airport in the future, I'll put it this way... In the last year alone 63,015,620 passengers traveled through Jakarta airport with no major issues.

In this instance I wouldn't recommend transiting through Manila. QF and CX currently use separate terminals which aren't easy to transit between.

(Although on a side note, there are rumours the Philippines Government is looking to shake up which terminals airlines use and Qantas might be directed to use Terminal 3 where CX already is, and allowing QF passengers to use the excellent CX lounge which isn't currently an option!)

Absolutely agree with ciaomucca. Manila is one of the most inconvenient airports in all SE Asia to begin your journey, much less transit through! There are issues with overcrowding, separate terminals, lack of reliable/safe transport between terminals, barely functioning climate control, terminal amenities and cleanliness (lack thereof) and the infamous 'bullet' scams pulled on unsuspecting travellers perpetrated by the security guards, no less! (Google it yourself) Stick with Jakarta, you'll be fine.
