Hi all, looking to book flights to LHR through a combination of reward bookings using Qantas points and paid fares with Qantas. As the reward flights will be on a partner airline - probably BA at this stage -will Qantas be able to book the itinerary as a single ticket over the phone so I won’t have to pick up and recheck baggage between the flights operated by Qantas and those operates by partner airlines?
If not, how long would people recommend I allow to collect and recheck baggage at Hong Kong?
You cannot combine the bookings I have tried. Bags can deffinetly be checked all the way through with one world partner as one is paid and one rewards as per this link.
I just did it for revenue then rewards for qantas (paid) from syd to Hong Kong then emirates (rewards) Hong Kong to Düsseldorf. Bags arrive in DUS without having to lift a finger.
Expect them to say no, know nothing about it and say it can’t be done when you go to check in at the airport but the baggage tags can be manually printed by staff. Just be persistent, show them the web page and ensure you tell them one booking is a rewards one.

Ive also been able to check bags through on SYD-MEL-HKG-PEK from separate bookings with Virgin and it's partner Hong Kong airlines. Same story, couldn't confirm on phone but ok after a bit of persuasion upon check-in at Sydney.
Has anyone had problems checking baggage though on Etihad with combined award bookings? I saw they brought in a policy requiring the segments to be booked under the same PRN in order to check through.

Thanks Chillybags - it looks like Qantas would through check the bags onto BA outbound, but BA would not on the return. BA seem to have adopted a zero tolerance approach. Will look for a different option for the return leg.
