Hello, first post from me. I’m VA platinum with ~400k points across Velocity & AmEx. I’m thinking of transferring these to Kris as reward availability is apparently better with Kris. I’m trying to book PE or Bus ADL/MEL/SYD to Tokyo in Sept/Oct 2019 but only see waitlist fares. HALP! Am I better off buying economy fairs and then upgrading with points? I was hoping to fly one way business to Tokyo via Singapore with an overnight stay (with wife + 4 year old and 8 month old)...
Your VA status won't help in this situation but how you transfer the points might. Obviously VA points can be transferred to SQ but you lose some, 1.35 VA points -> 1 SQ miles. Amex points can also be transferred directly to SQ at 1:1 so it'd be best to put them across directly.
Reward availability on SQ is often better as they tend not to release Premium cabin seat awards to their partners. Ideally finding a seat would be best (as it's locked in) and I'd advise against the waitlists (it basically means no seats are currently available for rewards and they'll let you know closer to the flight ~24-48 hours prior).
If you did purchase Economy tickets they'd need to be in a more expensive category that allows for upgrades and if the aircraft has a Premium Economy cabin then you'll be stuck in Premium Economy as you can only upgrade one cabin at a time (Economy -> Premium Economy or Premium Economy -> Business). The is assuming they even have the space for an upgrade available (same reward availability as booking with points).
If you could be more specific with locations and dates then that would be helpful but I don't like your chances getting 3 seats in Business class during the school holiday period.
Try other Japanese cities such as NGO or KIX you might have better luck.
Thanks Michael! By way of an update I ended up booking 2 adults, 1 toddler, 1 infant ADL-SIN-Haneda in cash (<$2k bulk head seats + extra legroom) then 249k Kris +$200 for business right through from Osaka-SIN-ADL.
Hey guys, i have 40,000 kris flyer points that I'm told will run out in a couple of months. Do you know any other way to use them other than flights as 40000 isn't enough to do anyhing with on flights. Can I buy a kettle or a toaster with them at least?
