I'm currently looking for booking on CX with points, I don't know it's normal or not, but the website shows no seats for the entire January, not even in Economy (checked SYD/MEL/BNE/CNS/PER/ADL) , and called Platinum customer service and they've said they can't find anything too.

One word: frustrating.

The available seats would have been snapped up months ago - holiday season. I got my HK reward seats in January in May this year.

Do you need to be on CX? Platinums can request award space on QF metal, so if you're open to flying QF that would be my suggestion. I got two HKG-SYD J seats opened for early Jan back in March.

Chinese New Year 5 Feb wouldn’t be helping either , early this year, many would be heading off in Jan.

Aussies go overseas in December and come back in January. Airlines will price fares and adjust award availability accordingly.

January is not a great month for award bookings with the first week usually blacked out and then the subsequent weeks in high demand as it is still the school holidays. This year especially, the Chinese New Year starts on the first week of February which means most of the last week of January and February's first week is all snapped.

There WERE reward flights available, but they've all gone. You have zero chance of getting seats over a school holiday period when you leave it to just two months before departure.

As soon as I saw the thread title I thought:

“I’ll bet the month they are referring to is January”.

Inbound flights to AU in Jan are always in peak demand, particularly from Asia.

Or aussies have christmas at home and go overseas in January because the prices are a little cheaper

There is no point looking for reward seats in January or July one or two months out. They are peak times for either hemispheres.

Finally found two HKG-CNS in CX business in January. The only thing left is just another $250 worth of Qantas flight home.

Sorry to hear that. As a frequently flyer I don't recommend to fly out from Australia's holiday season (Christmas, not Melbourne Cup, stops the nation). You would expect people fly back on second week of January (with empty wallet), then last week of January (kids back to school), then early Feb (yes Feb 5 is Chinese New Year), up to end of Feb (yeah Uni kids back to school). Don't forget CX is the favourite choice of the people-from-strong-economies.

QF would be an easier choice if you determine to fly out using points. At least you can avoid most demands from people-from-strong-economies.

I tried to redeem tickets for my family on our UK trip in Jan-18. In the end they could only get GTW-HKG-CNS. We bought single tickets from CNS back to where we live.

Me as well. CNS seems like the only choice for flights back to Aus on CX.
