I've been planning for a trip to Vancouver in May 2020, departing mid-May. Have been checking reward J availability for a few weeks, and we haven't been quite to the available date , but in the days and weeks leading up to my desired date there have been plenty of reward seats available. All that changed on the weekend, with no reward J availability at all for BNE-YVR or BNE-YYC (Calgary) in the March, April or May. What would have suddenly changed? Would surprise me if all available seats were suddenly booked on the weekend...

Airlines do that from time to time. They can withdraw award seats all of the sudden at their discretion. It’s part of the game.

What surprised me though, is that you could see multiple awards on BNE-YVR at 10 months out! AC usually release at about 355 days out and they are gone in 48hrs. So it could be phantom seats you were seeing.

I don't think Phantom, I proceeded down to the booking pages a couple of times and right to the payment page...

Flights were VA to LAX then Delta from LAX, so no AC. I realise it's the "game" but for weeks there has been plenty of availability across many days int he week, but suddenly just as we are approaching having the dates I want available, everything has gone! I thought maybe someone would know something more than the generic...

might be due to Virgin Australia's current LAX delays?

VA isn’t suppose to be generous anyway. Never seen any J seats to LAX more than 7 days out.

I've found early Feb is the easiest time to grab a business class reward on VA. Note that your seat assignment may well be moved for a paying biz customer on that flight. I've been moved back when booked on points and also moved up (without asking) when paid.
