Last few trans-Tasman flights Qantas has run out of hot meal options. I'm a Platinum frequent flyer sitting in business class and they ran out of hot meal options after serving two passengers.
Yes, I try to avoid the QF 737's trans Tasman J for a number of reasons and this is one of them. Not a problem I have come across on the QF A330's into AKL or EK to CHC.
QF J catering on the trans-Tasman flights is terrible. They have a menu of what appears to be 5 options but really is only one proper hot meal option (of which as you note they only load about two), a cold salad with protein, some sort of hot sandwich that on my last flight was a pepperoni and cheese ciabatta that must have cost all of $1 to buy the ingredients for, and then a cheese plate and a starter repurposed as a main size option. Last time I asked for a hot meal from Economy and was told only if there were spares left after the Y service (of which there ended up being none), so I had the hot sandwich. Next time they pull this stunt on me I am going to insist on a proper hot meal from Y and tell them they can serve the sandwich to someone in the back.
