Earning Qantas points, status credits on Air New Zealand flights

Qantas travellers members will be able to earn Qantas frequent flyer points and status credits on selected Air New Zealand flights starting 28 October 2018 through a new partnership between the Aussie and Kiwi carriers.

That tie-ups replaces the alliance between Virgin Australia and Air New Zealand, which will end on the same date.

A spokesperson for Qantas told Australian Business Traveller that Qantas Frequent Flyer members will earn 800 Qantas points and 10 status credits on discount economy and standard economy fares on codeshared domestic Air New Zealand flights, and 1200 points and 20 status credits on flexible economy fares.

Those rates are regardless of the actual distance of the NZ flight, the spokesperson confirmed, as all flights fall into the 0-750 mile bracket. “There are no domestic New Zealand flights we codeshare on that are longer than that distance,” the spokesperson said.

The Qantas / Air New Zealand alliance covers selected flights on the domestic network of each airline, although trans-Tasman and other international flights are excluded from the arrangement.

To earn those points and status credits, passengers must be booked on the Qantas flight number for the codeshared AirNZ flight (these fall into the QF8xxx range).

However, not all of Air New Zealand’s domestic flights will be covered by the codeshare arrangement.

A spokesman for Qantas has advised Australian Business Traveller that in circumstances where there are competing domestic Jetstar NZ and Air New Zealand flights to the same destination, if the Jetstar flight departs within the ‘minimum connection time’ for an inbound Qantas trans-Tasman flight, only the Jetstar service will carry a QF codeshare – not the later-departing Air New Zealand flight.

Qantas frequent flyers appear to be getting the better part of the codeshare hook-up, as Air New Zealand’s own frequent flyers will earn Airpoints miles but not status credits on domestic Qantas flights.

That haul will range from 3-10 Airpoints depending on the class of travel on a short leg such as Sydney-Melbourne, to between 10 and 52 Airpoints flying between Sydney and Perth.

Any news yet on lounge access for various levels of Qantas status and lounge members?

At first glance it seems possible a JQ QF codeshare connection would mean no lounge access where a NZ QF codeshare connection would come with the benefit of lounge access.

That seems to be correct.

When on a JQ flight QF coded you won't get lounge access as per the existing arrangements.

When on a NZ flight QF coded you will get lounge access as per the Qantas website:

"From 28 October 2018, as a Gold Qantas Frequent Flyer, when you travel on an onward New Zealand domestic flight operated by Air New Zealand with a Qantas (QF) flight number, be sure to have your boarding pass or ticket and Qantas Frequent Flyer membership card with you to receive:
Lounge Access
  • Access for you and one guest travelling together (children over the age of two are counted as a guest) to Air New Zealand Domestic and Regional lounges"

Only Gold, Platinum and Platinum One gets access with one guest (no QF club cardholder access to NZ lounges).

It seems Air NZ Airpoints members are getting a raw deal in regards to Status points. I am curious to why Air NZ is giving more to Qantas, than Qantas is giving to Air NZ to their respective FF programmes.

As of today - 24 July, there is nothing on Air NZ website about the proposed Qantas/Air NZ co-share points and Status earning for Airports members.

Yes it's been up for a few days.

Go to the Air NZ website -> hover over "Airpoints" then select "Co-operation partners".

Qantas is now listed under "Code share and frequent flyer agreements" just below Silk Air

In summary, if you have both QFF and Air NZ Airpoints accounts you are better off earning and crediting to if you have a domestic connection on both sides. QFF is more generous on NZ domestic connections to QF Trans-Tasman flights than NZ is to NZ domestic connections to NZ Trans-Tasman flights. Of course if you have status with one and not the other, then lounge access may influence it.

Airpoints members are effectively getting a similar deal with QF domestically in Australia (on NZ flight numbers) as they had with VA. However, QFF members are getting much more, with QF flight numbers on NZ domestic flights, lounge access (which of course doesn't exist for JQ in NZ because there are no lounges!) and status credit.

minus of course, priority check in and extra baggage allowance which currently exist on VA in Australia for NZ codeshare flights, which I missed
