How the Qantas Frequent Flyer 'overhaul' will affect you

By Chris C., June 20 2019
How the Qantas Frequent Flyer 'overhaul' will affect you

Qantas is embarking on a year-long overhaul of its loyalty scheme, but it all boils down to those points-based 'reward' seats – and the long-awaited launch of Lifetime Platinum status for the very very frequent flyer.

The bottom line? There'll be more seats up for grabs, with 'carrier charges' on most international Qantas flights reduced by as much as half.

Fewer Qantas Points will be needed to book an economy seat on international flights, although you'll need more Qantas Points to snare a seat in premium economy, business class and first class – and more points to upgrade, too.

Framing all of this is a revamped website which the airline says will make it easier to find and book those points-based trips. It's a work-in-progress which will eventually put a full year's worth of reward seat availability just a few mouse-clicks or finger-swipes away. The first component of this – a streamlined My Account page on the Qantas website – is now live.

New to the mix: a Qantas Points Club to recognise members who earn most or all of their points on the ground as 'frequent buyers' rather than frequent flyers.

Here’s our breakdown of what’s changing in the Qantas Frequent Flyer world, and how it affects you.

Qantas Lifetime Platinum frequent flyer status

Crowning its existing Lifetime Silver and Lifetime Gold frequent flyer tiers, Qantas will introduce Lifetime Platinum status in September 2019.

But pocketing that shiny card won't come easy: you'll need a whopping 75,000 Qantas status credits to your name.

More reward seats released for frequent flyers

Just about every Qantas Frequent Flyer member knows the pain of trying to find a reward seat which they can 'buy' with their Qantas Points.

Qantas promises to earmark some five million seats on Qantas domestic and international flights each year, with "up to 30%" more premium economy, business class and even first class seats to popular destinations such as Singapore, London, Los Angeles and Tokyo.

In addition, there's between three and five million seats on partner airlines – including an extra one million seats largely allocated through newly-minted partner airlines Air New Zealand, Air France, KLM and Bangkok Airways – opening up reward flights across New Zealand, South East Asia and Europe.

Qantas ‘carrier charges’ reduced on reward bookings

Qantas has come in for plenty of criticism over the self-imposed ‘carrier charges’ levied on points-based bookings – fees which sit on top of government taxes and airport charges.

The airline is reducing carrier charges on most international flights, except for New Zealand and some nearby South Pacific locations, at a claimed rate of "up to 50%".

The reduced rates kick in from today on international economy reward flights, and for bookings made from September 18 2019 on international premium economy, business class and first class reward flights (the delay is tied in with the increase in the number of points required for those premium bookings).

Here’s an example of how the total amount payable in taxes, fees and carrier charges will change for points-based premium cabin bookings on two popular routes:

$1,284

$904 (-$380)

Melbourne-LA

$793

$603 (-$190)

$943

$703 (-$240)

The savings for international economy class flights are less pronounced: expect a drop from $564 to $484 in taxes, fees and charges on a Sydney-London return trip, and $513 to $393 round-trip between Melbourne and Los Angeles.

Swings and roundabouts for points-based bookings, upgrades

The number of Qantas Points needed to book an international economy class fare will drop "by up to 10%" as of today. But if you'd rather travel in more comfort, it'll cost you "up to 15%" more points as of September 18, 2019.

Here's how that shakes out on the two key routes of Sydney-London and Melbourne-Los Angeles, based on round-trip travel.

Also changing: the cost of an upgrade is also set to rise "by up to 9%" when requested from 18 September 2019.

This will impact longer international flights the most, with an economy to business upgrade on Sydney to London increasing from 120,000 points to 130,800 points, and discount business-to-first upgrades on the same flights needing up to 81,700 points, up from 75,000 points.

Here is a summary for classic upgrades on domestic routes from economy to business. Not included in this table are upgrades to premium economy on QF9/10 domestic sectors or upgrading from a classic reward economy fare, both of which will need more Qantas Points as well.

Popular Oneworld Classic Flight Rewards, which are typically used to book around-the-world journeys with Qantas and its Oneworld partner airlines, will also increase. In first class, the cost will rise from 420,000 to 455,000 Qantas Points, and in business class, from 280,000 to 318,000 Qantas Points.

(A previous version of this story listed that these round-the-world rates were not changing. This was based on incorrect information supplied to Executive Traveller by Qantas Loyalty.)

What hasn't changed...

Qantas' decision to trumpet all this as "the biggest overhaul to the airline’s loyalty program in its 32 year history" sparked plenty of speculation and kicked the rumour mill into overdrive, so let's set the record straight.

The Qantas Frequent Flyer scheme isn't adopting the demand-driven 'dynamic pricing' model adopted by several international airlines, where the number of points needed for a reward ticket vary from flight to flight.

Qantas confirms there will be no change to the number of status credits needed for Qantas Silver, Gold, Platinum or Platinum One, or to the benefits these tiers provide; nor to the qualification levels for Lifetime Silver or Lifetime Gold (which remain pegged at 7,000 and 14,000 status credits, respectively).

Double Status Credits promotions won't disappear: some will continue to be targeted to individual members, while others will remain open to all Qantas Frequent Flyer members.

> Finally, there will be no change to the popular Oneworld Classic Flight Reward package, which is typically used to book around-the-world journeys with Qantas and its Oneworld partner airlines at appealing rates such as 420,000 Qantas Points in first class and 280,000 Qantas Points in business class.

That does not appear to match the updated reward table, which increases 280k -> 318k and 420k -> 455k.

So let’s get this straight, the marketing geniuses at Qantas thought members would be impressed with them touting an unattainable 75,000 points earned level for lifetime platinum? By my maths that’s being a Qantas Platinum One level member every year for over 20 years?

Is there anyone in their marketing team who can count? What would the total dollar spent number be to earn this status? Marketing team once you’ve dusted off your calculators - when last we’re you in a Qantas first lounge? Seriously.....
All they have succeeded in doing is alienate both loyal platinum and platinum one members.

A small increase in points, but a substantial decrease in the cash co-payment. QF did some research earlier int he year (some AusBT readers were involved) and the question they asked was whether people would prefer more points+lower cash or vice versa. We now know which side won!

I'm happy with more award space opening. The points increase are modest (for business class), if in return it's much easier to get availability.

Will see how my Bronze for life status gets impacted in the coming months.

I'm surprised they haven't launched more ways to get status, either by increase in Qantas spend in other categories or to burn points on their Qantas retail store. I would think they want to incentify points use on the lowest value products such as the retail store.

Agree - it's easy to say they will increase redemption availability across the network by XX seats, but the devil is in the detail. There really is no way to validate that, and comes down to what routes and dates they have extra seats available on.

A true enhancement would have been to earn SC's and points on rewards bookings. After all, the airline is getting paid for them with the QFF points currency.

And, while they are at it .. if upgrading on points (QFF currency) the earn should be equal to the upgrade class for points and SC's.

Now, that would be enhancing!

...AND substantially less money. They did some research earlier this year and it seems the majority of respondents said they would be happy to have a small increase in points cost provided that the dollar co-payment was reduced. Give and take.

Yes...YOU give, and QANTAS takes.
The things that matter to me are not adressed well by QANTAS...for example, as a gold member for many years with both Emirates and QANTAS, the value of a QANTAS gold is less than that of Emirates (because there are more tiers in QANTAS), accordingly I can't pre-select my seat on a QANTAS plane (I can on an Emirates plane). I can easily get a points-booked seat on any flight with Emirates, yet with QANTAS my points balance is always up around 500,000 because It's very hard to use them to book seats. Even after today's adjustments, the additional fee to travel on a QANTAS points-booked seat is still much higher than that of Emirates. We need to remember that QANTAS is a business and WE are just a contributor to the bottom line....

In case it hasn't been mentioned already, be very wary of the "More reward seats released for frequent flyers" part.

Cathay Pacific promised the same thing in conjunction with their huge Asia Miles overhaul (devaluation) on 22 June last year. In reality, award availability was cut drastically on most routes. To make up for this drop, and to fulfil the "more award seats" promise, they regularly charter "All Award Seat Flights" (flights that are only available with points redemptions) to obscure destinations in Japan. These flights are useless to most people but allow CX to effectively keep their promise of more available award seats.

I noted that Qantas recently chartered one of these "A330 Points Planes" (to get people familiarised with this product before the devaluation?), so my advice is be VERY wary of what they are planning next.

I think it is what i expected, the benefits are going to non frequent flyers who earn their points through credit cards & partners and want to secure flights with points. That's where the money is for Qantas. For the very loyal Qantas flyers it's going to cost more points to upgrade flights, but as the press release said, the Loyalty Program made more profit than Qantas International so you can see where their focus is. I was excited about Lifetime Platinum being on the table but at 75,000 SC, as mentioned by a previous contributor thats 20 years flying at Platinum One. I started flying with Qantas in 2001 after Ansett when under, pretty much went straight to Gold, last 5 years at Platinum & this year will be Platinum One. Lifetime Platinum is really something they don't want to give away, and seriously if you can obtain 75,000 SC its not something you would be even thinking about. You're a great airline Qantas and I'll continue to fly with you, but think about where you started, people who spend their time in the air is what got you to where you are

This "enhancement" makes the recently devalued American Advantage points for premium travel seem much better- 85,000 miles for J from South Pacific to Europe and much lower fees.

On points v points spending basis yes... But if you are Australian based, you have many more options (and often very cheaply or free) to obtain QF points over any potential AA earning options.

I like the fact they have reduced economy points required and increased available seats,, great for families who would generally miss out. I just hope some of the extra seats that become available aren’t Jetstar seats, they weren’t specific on whether it was actually QF seats.

I'm LTG with UA and with Qantas. I've been P for the last 15 years, but at 66, will never see LTP with Qantas. At my current earn rate, it'll take me another 35 years to hit 75,000, so I'd be 101. I guess Qantas are telling me to take my business to another airline. Maybe an unpublished benefit is a walking frame.
Sadly, one of my colleagues who doesn't fly much, but puts everything on his card, earns more points and seems to be more valued by Qantas than someone who flies a long-haul every other month and several local short hops in-between. While he doesn't earn SC on his purchases, he has points to burn and usually uses them for an occasional holiday seated down the front.

Is this uptick in availability only for QF frequent flyers or also for OneWorld partner airlines as well?

The maths and a move from Sydney to Europe says I should switch to British Airways. 75,000 lifetime platinum. It’s more attainable to start fresh with a more realistic program. Good bye to the Kangaroo. I’ll miss lots of things ... the lamb and mint pies but these changes make Qantas pretty unattractive right now

Qantas has to be kidding, 75,000 status credits for Lifetime Platinum. That is a joke . Like 313 return trips to USA in Business.

They should have made it 21,000. 7,000 for Lifetime Silver, 14,000 for Gold and 21,000 for Platinum.

What about the people who have lifetime Gold, that travelled on Qantas before the Status Credit system started, and get nothing.

This new police discrimiates and is so disappointing.

I was booked in Business on a Qantas A380 flight to USA and they cancelled the flight and me on another airline, whose seats, service and lounge were very sub standard. They they wont give me my points of SC. They like to piss off customers

Checking on availability of points flights in economy.

SYD - Munich next year depart June return July 131,000 points, now I think that’s not too bad, taxes $770, that is still high in comparison to say a discount fare of $1,200 return.
But consider this if I want to go in December this year and return in January 2020, I could be up for 500,000 points, so flights are available for points but almost out of reach for a family of 4 or even two.

Watching the news a couple of days ago really gave me a laugh - a woman said "I've never been able to use my points when I want" - well hello! That was never the idea of frequent flyer programmes anyhow. It was supposed to be a way for airlines to get rid of unsold inventory. I've never had any problems getting flights at the last minute with most airlines (inside 24 hours of departure) and I've always needed to be flexible with my travel plans and destinations and don't expect to be able to do it in peak seasons.

In any case, QFF have never really been good value. Their reduced "Carrier Charges" are still excessive compared to UA, SQ or AA which don't have any carrier charges. That's the reason I dumped them years ago. When flying on QF these days, I've always found the best chance of an upgrade with them on long-haul is to book a Paid PE ticket mid-week and pay for upgrade bid.
