Singapore’s Mandarin Oriental hotel is back among the city-state’s growing list of five star stays, having reopened after an extensive six-month makeover.

A landmark in the Marina Bay dress circle since 1987, the Mandarin Oriental’s interiors have been reborn with colour and inspiration from signature Singaporean elements such as Peranakan style architecture, black and white houses and Angsana trees.

“Every corner of the hotel tells a story, from Singapore’s lush landscapes to the intricate details found in traditional shophouses,” says Jeffrey Wilkes, whose interior design firm DesignWilkes shaped the new look. “We wanted guests not just to be visiting the city, but to feel a part of it.”

This blurring of boundaries between indoors and outdoors comes to the fore in the design of the hotel’s 510 rooms and suites.

Rooms take their cues from the scenes outside their windows – dappled batik patterns and a cooler colour palette blend with the water of Marina Bay-facing rooms, while those facing onto the South China Sea are bathed in warm tones reminiscent of the morning sun.

The hotel’s all-day dining concept has been reimagined as a refreshed garden-style space, while The Mandarin Cake Shop patisserie is expected to be a hit with the afternoon tea brigade.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the Singapore CBD, another grand dame of the city’s five-star hotel set has pushed back its reopening.

Sitting just off the busy Scotts & Orchard intersection, the Grand Hyatt Singapore first intended to reveal its own top-to-bottom renovation in the middle of 2023, but now says “the Terrace Wing and its facilities will re-open in Q1 2024 while guestrooms in Grand Wing will open in 2024.”
