Qantas, Jetstar set to ramp up domestic flights
As travel restrictions start to ease across the country, Qantas and Jetstar will increase their domestic and regional flying.
Qantas and Jetstar are beginning to put some meat back onto the bones of their current skeleton schedule as travel restrictions ease, scaling up from a current 5% of pre-coronavirus capacity to 15 per cent by the end of June – about 300 return flights per week – to 40% by the end of July.
However, both airlines remain eager to see the borders of Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia, the Northern Territory and Tasmania swing open again – especially as the July school holidays draw near.
“We know there is a lot of pent up demand for air travel and we are already seeing a big increase in customers booking and planning flights in the weeks and months ahead,” notes Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce.
“We are gradually adding flights in June as demand levels increase (and) we can quickly ramp up flying in time for the July school holidays if border restrictions have eased more by then."
The combined schedules will fatten up the Sydney-Melbourne corridor – usually one of the world's busiest domestic airline routes – along with increased intra-state flights within New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia.
Flights will resume on eight routes which have been suspended, while the coronavirus-delayed launch of Qantas flights from Sydney to Byron Bay /Ballina is back on the cards.
However, passengers can expect a different travel experience, with cabin crew handing out masks and sanitising wipes, while lounges will impose a capacity limit due to social distancing and will replace buffets with prepared meals and snacks.
"We’ll be sending out information before their flight so they know exactly what to expect and have some extra peace of mind," Joyce said. “Importantly, the Australian Government’s medical experts have said the risk of contracting Coronavirus on an aircraft is low."

Qantas and Jetstar will also allow travellers to change the date of their domestic flight once, without paying a change fee, for bookings made before 30 June 2020 on travel between 12 June and 31 October 2020.
Using your Qantas Points to book a Classic Flight Reward seat on any Qantas or Jetstar flight will allow a change of date or cancelling the booking free of charge until 31 October 2020.

This is great to see. It's a good feeling seeing our country slowly reopening. Best of luck to all the airlines who try to rebuild their networks over the coming months.

I think QLD is nuts keeping the border closed, NSW and Vic people need a break and will spend money in there own states being locked out of the QLD sunshine. On top of that their talking about supporting Virgin, I hate to see what they would do if they didn't like VA maybe NSW and Vic can come up with support for VA, it appears Qld is all bull.

Upupupnaway why just Qld what about SA, WA, Tassie, and NT. Can't have just one being ‘nuts'. Maybe they're all being cautious and listening to their health officers.

Ok I think there all nuts, but Tassie I heard are reopening. I agree there is a risk but we have managed the risk well so far, wash your hand every hour or 2 hours and social distance. I actually think if we could do serology testing you would find a large amount of people have had covid 19 here anyway but it's been managed well.

Actually the interesting bit is the fact that NSW is picking a fight mainly with 2 states, WA and QLD, But not the other states (they may make some noise but AFAIK its these 2 states that the premier named specifically)

Whenever they are opening (I am guessing 40% capacity) the social distancing rule may mean you can't get in half of the time during the peak hours anyway

I'd say it's because it's so heavily reliant on tourism, like the Sunshine Coast which is still not back on the QF/JQ network.

QF would love to open the routes from SYDand MEL to OOL, MCY, HTI, CNS etc but until the Qld Government reopen the borders between NSW and Qld, it isn't going to happen. Unfortunately, this will not be revisited by the Qld Government until after the school holidays meaning many towns up and down the Qld coast will miss their busiest period for the year when tourists from NSW and Victoria escape winter.

It is possible to do a short field landing in a smaller plane and stay in NSW (C-150) trust me I know.

I'm interested in viewpoints on the fares that will be charged in Qantas Business with the pared back service. Do readers believe there should be discounted Business fares or pre-COVID fares when travel resumes domestically?

Agree ian62, Their needs to be some adjustments to price here and very clear statements about what is included and offered in the 'new world' or transitional world. I also understand that from the airlines point of veiw they need the cash flowing, lets just see some detailed transparency.

Let's see what the airfares will be like before we start celebrating. Alan Joyce has said previously that he is committed to keeping fares in check but I doubt we will see that if demand far outstrips supply.
