Qatar Airways eyes new A380 business class

Qatar Airways plans to keep flying the A380 for years to come and will upgrade the superjumbo to make it a better fit for the Oneworld member’s fleet and passenger’s expectations.

Former long-standing Qatar Airways CEO Akbar Al Baker was keen to keep the A380s grounded after the pandemic, going so far to describe their purchase as “the biggest mistake” in the airline’s history.

Speaking with media at the airline’s launch of the Qsuite Next Gen business class, Al Baker’s successor Badr Al-Meer admitted there was a plan to once again scrap the A380s beginning this year.

However, Al-Meer now sees a very different future for the double-decker jet, with eight A380s from an initial fleet of 12 expected to continue flying until at least 2028 – provided high levels of demand continue to fill most of the superjumbo’s 517 seats.

The A380 has been proving its worth in the post-pandemic travel surge due to delays in the production of new Airbus and Boeing jets.

Drivers of renewed demand

Speaking with media following the airline’s launch of the Qsuite Next Gen business class, Al-Meer said the A380 was particular well-suited to capacity-constrained airports such as London Heathrow, and called out Australia’s current cap on Qatar Airways flights as creating another strong scenario for the A380, which today flies daily between Sydney and Doha.

(As previously reported, Qatar Airways is now seeking government approval for an additional 28 flights per week to Australia, under a proposal to deliver one extra flight per day into Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth.)

With all that in mind, Al-Meer said “The decision was made to extend the operations of the A380 and to make some modifications to it.”

Up for consideration is a refit of the cabin, including elevating the A380’s original business class seats to suites with sliding doors, larger video screens with bluetooth streaming, wireless charging and all the other mod-cons.

Al-Meer confirfmed that options for the A380 cabin upgrades were current being looked at, saying “we’re discussing this internally to see how we can address this.”

It’s unlikely the A380 will see the adoption of the latest Qsuite 2 or even the original Qsuite due to the dimensions of the upper deck cabin and the curvature of its walls.

However, this still leaves plenty of scope for Qatar Airways to tap an off-the-shelf product with a smaller footprint for limited customisation.

In the meantime, Qatar will move ahead with the addition of free super-fast WiFi, which is also being rolled out across the broader QR fleet over the next two years.

Qatar Airways’ new inflight WiFi system will be powered by Starlink – the communications satellite arm of Elon Musk’s SpaceX venture – using a constellation of ‘micro-satellites’ to deliver speeds in excess of 100Mbps per passenger for a true ‘broadband in the sky’ experience.

“On A380s that we operate in Qatar Airways, the WiFi is not as fast or as strong on the other aircraft,” Al-Meer admitted, “so the first project that we will undertake immediately is to upgrade the WiFi service on the A380.”

I was really saddened when the Boeing 747-400s were retired, but it took the Airbus A380 to be that aircraft that was handed the baton, and a worthy competitor at that.  So glad to read that Qatar is upgrading to extend the reign of the A380.  I will always, ALWAYS look to an airline with an A380 in the long haul fleet.  So glad to read that Mr Al-Meer has reconsidered his position, and hope other airlines with a modicum of foresight do likewise.

Good to see this and hopefully it comes to fruition sooner than later. When looking at business class across Qatar's A380s, Etihad's particularly dated 777, and Emirates' 777 (also slated for a refresh at last), the offering from the big 3 Middle East carriers into many Australian cities isn't currently very competitive, despite demanding some of the highest fares in their networks.

I believe that Qatar also flies a 380 regularly out of Perth to Doha.

Correct grov.  Daily A380 ex Perth since end of pandemic.  Flew in April to Europe in April and the J class was full both ways.  Although dated it is still a good product and staff are some of the friendliest and most attentive of any airline.

Agree too!! Have flown the A380 out of Perth to EU/UK many times & the soft & hard product is the best I think! And the bar area on the A380 is also the best in the sky!! Long live the double decker! 👍🏾

A380 every day of the week for me (and if not, the A350).

Noooo!  Leave the business class how it is, it's one of the best and preferred over Qsuites IMO!

Weirdly, agree. I think Qsuites are lovely, but as a tall man the seats when lie flat beds are harder and narrower than A380 which just feels roomier. Have flown Qsuites wherever possible over the last couple of years but back on the A380 out of Sydney in 10 days, so be interesting to compare again. The price difference between Qsuite and A380 is pretty astronomical too.

Great news - if the F seats are upgraded too, it will increase their longevity and appeal

While there's potential here for QR to invest in a better business class and first class for the A380s, right now they're still fine, especially business class. Okay, it's an 'open' design instead of having a privacy shell like CX business or sliding doors like the QSuite but it's still pretty good. F would need to be a big overhaul though, it would have to be high-walled suites with sliding doors. If QR can pull something like that off the shelf, great, but most F suites seem to be very customised, created just for the airline, so they are very expensive.

There are some good 'off the shelf' first class suites, though, the Collins Aerospace Oasis is pretty good.

Funny how QR has tried twice to ditch the A380s but they keep coming back, right now despite high fuel costs the travel environment really favours these double-deckers. The key to making an A380 work was always high load factor and high yield from high airfares, so post-COVID is a great time for them! When things get back to normal that will change but also the short supply of new 'big twins' from Airbus and Boeing is also taking its toll on airlines and keeping the A380 around for longer.
