I wonder what would happen if you enter the UK without one? Feasibly you could arrive in Dublin, then cross into Northern Ireland without any checks although technically in the UK. Followed by travelling across to Britain, again without formal immigration checks?

Xi'an has the Sleep Box Hotel with their cabins on the Departure Level of T3. Made use of it in July after a late night arrival. Was comfortable and surprisingly quiet, despite the location. Very comparable with my experience with Aerotel, just without an attached lounge.
