Virgin Australia adds Singapore Airlines codeshares to Europe

Virgin Australia is adding almost 20 cities to its route map through additional partner flights with Singapore Airlines and SQ's regional offshoot SilkAir.

Europe and India are in the codeshare crosshairs as Virgin continues to expand the ‘virtual network’ model championed by Virgin Australia chief John Borghetti.

A Virgin Australia spokesperson tells Australian Business Traveller the flights are "part of the rolling out of our codeshare expansion under our alliance with Singapore Airlines."

The new roster includes Amsterdam, Bangalore, Copenhagen, Delhi, Jakarta, London, Munich, Manchester, Paris and Zurich.

However, flights to European destinations are restricted to Virgin Australia passengers travelling from Perth and Darwin. That's to avoid duplicating any European services offered by Virgin partner and stakeholder Etihad, which has no flights from either of those two Australian cities.

Virgin Australia's codeshare flights operated by Silk Air fly from Singapore to Bangalore, Chennai, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Kochi, Kolkata and Thiruvananthapuram.

Virgin Australia codeshare flights operated by Singapore Airlines fly from Singapore to Ahmedabad, Amsterdam, Bangalore, Chennai, Copenhagen, Delhi, Denpasar, Jakarta, Kolkata, London, Mumbai, Munich – Manchester, Paris and Zurich.

I have tried to book  Copenhagen (CPH) from Sydney on the Virgin Australia website and CPH is not even an option?

I am fairly sure Etihad doesn't fly to Copenhagen from Adu Dhabi

On Etihads' own website  you'll have change flights twice Eg SYD-AUH-DUS-CPH similar to what you would do if going by BA/Qantas.

Etihad doesn't fly direct to Copenhagen - you have to transfer - but be that as it may, Virgin Australia is steadfast that none of SQ's European destinations can be booked and flown via Virgin from any airport where Etihad operates.

You can book it via the Singapore Airlines Website.I had the option of doing it via Virgin Australia to go to Singapore in December but they wanted Instant Purchase but SQ let me wait two to three weeks.Off the topic a little would a check in attendant at any of these airports know what a Velocity Card is?I am stil using my Thai Royal Orchid Plus to retain Silver there for now.
