A growing global appetite for curvy upscale SUVs has sparked a smooth new development of the Porsche Cayenne.
The Cayenne coupe will go up against similar contenders from Audi, Mercedes-Benz and BMW, which pioneered the move away from giant boxes with its original X6.
All the action on the newest Porsche model is at the rear, where the angular wagon-style tail of the Cayenne has been smoothed into something with much more style, but the windscreen and pillars are laid back a little more to create a lower roofline. An adaptive rear spoiler, which lifts at speed to improve stability, sits on the tail.
“The significantly more steep roofline that falls away to the rear makes the Cayenne Coupe appear even more dynamic, and positions it as the sportiest-looking model in the segment,” says Michael Mauer, vice-president of Style Porsche.
Inside, Porsche has fitted the Coupe with individual rear sports seats to make the car into a four-seater, with the rear passengers also sitting lower, and there are new 18-way front electric sports seats.
Australian pricing for the Cayenne Coupe is set from $128,400 with a turbocharged V6 engine or $254,000 with the top-end V8.
“We will get it in early 2020. Both models will arrive at the same time,” Porsche spokesman, Chris Jordan, confirms to Australian Business Traveller.
The slight price rise from the ‘regular’ Cayenne is offset by more standard equipment, from the sports seats to the sunroof, 20-inch alloy wheels, active suspension and the Sport Chrono package favoured by keen drivers across the Porsche range.
Jordan says Porsche Cars Australia is seeing demand for a large SUV that’s not just a giant box, with the company forecasting strong sales.
“We believe there is demand for an SUV with a more sporty and aggressive design. It won’t account for half of the range, but there is demand and we’re expecting strong sales.”

Those photos make me laugh, Cayennes are normally seen on the school run or in a hairdressers car park. A coupe Cayenne with less room and less load space is even more cringworthy.

Why would any manufacturer want to copy the BM X 6, seriously, what an ugly car. What were they thinking 'lets make a car that is useless; an SUV with less space, or a coupe with crap handling'. Genius!

On the contrary it makes more practical sense for a family ride than the Panamera. Looks sleeker than the Cayenne, but obviously less particle.
