EXCLUSIVE | Bendigo Bank is making its first foray into frequent flyer-earning credit cards with the launch of the new Bendigo Bank Qantas Platinum Mastercard.

Customers can earn 0.6 Qantas Points per dollar spent up to 20,000 points per monthly statement period against an annual fee of $149: albeit lower than the also-new Qantas Premier Mastercard which serves up 1 Qantas Point per $1 spent up to $10,000 per month and 0.5/$1 thereafter, uncapped.

Bendigo Bank awards no points on payments to the Tax Office, although a minimum credit limit of just $3,000 with no defined minimum income threshold makes the card accessible to most workers.

Up to 55 interest-free days are provided on purchases when the closing balance is paid in full each month, otherwise an interest rate of 19.99% p.a. applies – or 21.99% p.a. from the time of purchase for cash advances.

Also included are Platinum basics such as travel insurance, extended warranty cover, 90-day purchase protection and access to the ‘guaranteed pricing scheme’, with Mastercard PayPass and Android Pay also supported: although not Apple Pay.

(2018 update: this card now supports Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, Google Pay, Fitbit Pay and Garmin Pay.)

A 3% fee applies to all overseas purchases, but there’s no extra charge for having an additional cardholder on the account, such as your partner or spouse.

The bank also issues a ‘Rewards Platinum’ Mastercard attached to the separate Bendigo Rewards program, although Bendigo Rewards points cannot be converted into airline frequent flyer points.

Not sure why anyone would sign up to this card if you can get a better point to dollar earn rate on other cards....

Low earn rate and no sign up bonus as yet. The low minimum monthly limit is a positive though.

The Bendigo is a good bank that is more ethical than most. When it comes to customer service and technology they've got a long way to go. I live in a small town and it is nice to see some of my bank fees supporting local groups. That's offset by the frustration with their outdated systems. This card is probably only appealing to existing customers who already fly Qantas. I don't see it having mass appeal.

Hi Chris,
You (again!) mentioned QF Mastercard and did not mentioned Visa from Bank Australia - they still give a point per dollar uncapped for less annual fee.
As for discussed card I do not understand what is good about it comparing for example to  JetStar platinum - $20 more per year, but 1point per dollar plus 20,000 bonus points.

Hi Serg, as we've explained numerous times now, we generally don't cover products that aren't 'RBA ready' (Bank Australia has not yet announced any changes in light of the new interchange cap, nor have they assured that changes aren't being introduced as a result, so there's little use in us comparing a pre-RBA product (Bank Australia) compared to a post-RBA product (Bendigo, for example), because it's not a fair comparison and the pre-RBA product could well be changed at short notice).

Our passing mention of the Qantas Premier card here is because it's also new to the market, also RBA-ready, and has the same annual fee as the new Bendigo Platinum card in the first year - three traits not mirrored by Bank Australia.
