Thinking of flying to Singapore or London on British Airways to avoid Qantas' fuel surcharges and ticket price hikes while still earning Qantas Frequent Flyer miles?
Think again: oneworld partner airline BA has announced it's following other airlines' fuel surcharge price hikes and raising its own fuel surcharges.
It's an extra £20 -- A$32 or so -- each way in British Airways' Club World (Business) or First, or an extra £10 (A$16) in the airline's World Traveller (Economy) or World Traveller Plus (Premium Economy) cabins.
For a business traveller in Club World on flights from Australia, that brings the fuel surcharge up to an eye-watering £145 (A$228) in each direction.
As recently as last December, the fuel surcharge for a similar trip was £98 (A$154) each way.
The change comes into effect this Friday, 8 April.
Australian Business Traveller made a test booking on British Airways' website for a May return trip from Sydney to London. Here's the full breakdown of fees:
The ringed figure is the one that will change, rising to approximately A$456 on Friday.
On the plus side, business travellers connecting to UK or other European airports through London Heathrow on Qantas, British Airways or other oneworld airlines won't see a short-haul price hike. There's no change to the fuel surcharge for domestic or European flights.
