David - for quite some months, EVERY post or REPLY I post goes straight to moderation. Since, you have never edited, corrected or (God-forbid) banned any of my posts, I am wondering what the rationale is?
Frankly, I lodged four (4) posts in August - none of which have even appeared on the site since posting. Today I have lodged two (2). None of these have been remotely controversial. I am particularly interested in your response. Something is either very wrong here - or apparently my views may be counter-factual to yours and may be unwanted. However, if the latter is the case, please let me know.
EDIT: Surprise, surprise - this thread actually went straight through and came up. as it normally should.

Hi Kimshep, thanks for the feedback. Are you talking about comments on the stories or forums, or both? We heavily moderate most new threads because of the amount of attempted spam.

Hi Sid,
Any comments I make on new Stories / Articles automatically seem to go to Moderation (and it is debatable whether they appear at all). I consider that as questionable. I click on POST and off it (presumably) goes into the ether. There is no acknowledgement that the post has been received, or whether it has been sent to 'Moderation'.
Comments I may have made on the Community Discussion forum have also been doing the same thing over the past few months, however I noticed yesterday that for the first time in ages, the post (this one) actually appeared in the thread immediately after posting.
While I understand the challenges of both security and moderation, you can appreciate that after typing out a reply point or comment etc on an article, clicking on POST .. and then seeing it disappear (and wondering) whether it will (re)appear as valid commentary is somewhat disconcerting. It gives the poster no confidence that what they've written has been accepted on simply 'gone into the trash'.
From my point of view, I have always enjoyed the site and value the ability to see user views added to articles. However, I don't have time to waste on putting a response together and never seeing it survive. It is a waste of both my time and yours. If this is also happening to other members (as it appears may be the case), then this damages the credibility and usability of the site.
I know (and I am pretty sure that both you and David are aware) of the '3 level' stepped indent problem in replying to other member's posts. This is something that really needs to be fixed within the software. It has been an endemic issue for a few years. I appreciate your examination of this issue, because it has been an issue that has been dictating my usage of the site of late.

Addendum:
Just as I clicked on POST for this reply at 2:52pm, you had a Cloudflare outage warning come up. Fortunately, my response above got through, though. Although, I got a cached version of the page, with only my original post. On 'refresh' mine and the other posts became visible.
I also find that adding comments to existing news items already with comments is a bit hit and miss. To the point where I always Cntrl-C (copy) my text before I post it in case it gets lost. If when I refresh the news item my comment is not there, I have a second go at posting it and that sometimes fixes it.
EDIT: This post went straight through first time.

FYI, with regards to comments under articles, many of these are held for moderation and approval simply because we see too many comments that are off-topic, add no value or are just a pointless rant, and we can usually tell just from the topic of an article if it's going to generate comments along those lines.
When comments are held for moderation there's an alert on the screen to advise readers of this. Then it's just a matter off our having the time to go through comments during the day and either publish them or not. If a comment isn't published, it's for good reason, so nobody should ever take it personally.

I appreciate and accept your comment(s) in para 1 above, David.
However, the scenario you mention in para 2, has NOT occurred - in my experience - for quite a number of months. When I click on POST, the post button goes from red to black, and the screen then refreshes with an empty text box. No 'moderation' notice is being displayed - and as I and others have mentioned, in this circumstance, you never know whether the post has been received by the site or not.

This is my experience as well. No notification that the post has been accepted or in moderation. It just looks like the page has refreshed to a new comment box.
It would be good if your website software had another level of User, so that users with a known history could be raised to a trusted level not requiring moderation.
Can confirm I have a lot of issues posting, either technical (never show up) or held for moderation and never released. If it's the latter then IMHO it's way over moderated and makes not enough allowance for debate on the basis of my comments. However I do find the site is buggy, especially from mobile and I also copy the text before sending in case it doesn't go.
The chorus is getting louder...I too [sigh] have problems with comments/responses not getting posted. And like some have mentioned, my comments/responses were nothing controversial. Clearly there are issues here which are not being properly acknowledged(!) Whether it's editorial or technical, I have no clue. Either way, it's bad for discussion.

Honestly I find ET's over the top moderation no fun. Sometimes I would write a comment that is on the topic, but the part the mod team doesn't like - they change out or remove. Essentially the true essence of the comment is changed to suit the mod team (probably so they don't lose their sponsorships). Any attempt to refute that it's all $$$ driven is a lie.

I find about 80% of my comments on articles don't show up, so wouldn't take it personal. I assumed there was just a bug with the site.
