Ever since Qantas created its supposedly new Classic Plus rewards, the availability of the old Classic reward flights on long-haul international services has all but disappeared. Now, all that is ever offered in Classic Plus at a much higher point cost no matter what date range you select. A return J class reward flight from MEL to LHR using Classic Plus is now around 800,000 points!!!
Despite what was announced by Qantas when they introduced it, I think Classic Plus was just a way to quietly retire the old Classic rewards and further boost up the earnings of the Qantas Loyalty Division.
Totally agree reeves35 and as we know well, QF won’t do anything for frequent flyers unless it helps their bottom line.
I assume that they identified that there were far too many points banked with no way for FFs to use them. My understanding is that there is a balancing act where it is bad business for QF to have squillions of points just banked. They need a similar number of points redeemed as earned and revenue is not recognised on unredeemed points, hence, provide a new ‘exciting’ way for FFs to use points but at a lower value and the shareholders will love it!
I fear that the erroneous thinking of Joyce is now so deeply ingrained in Qantas that it can never be corrected. What erroneous thinking am I referring to?
This - 'Screw the workers AND paying customers, and just concentrate on maximizing corporate shareholders' profits.'
Oh, it works...for a time (sometimes even for years.) Until one day, it doesn't work anymore..

Qatar has something like Classic Plus but the number of points required is 2 times the standard number of points. The number of points needed for Classic Plus seats seems to be something like 4 times. It's crazy. who wants to spend 500k+ points on a one way J ticket?
It takes a special skill for a CEO to decimate a workforce, disenfranchise those who remain, fail to invest to grow a business and not care in the slightest for the customer’s wants and needs.
How the board allowed this to happen under his watch is incomprehensible and I cannot see there being a quick fix. The new CEO has done little to instill customer confidence, continually failing to impress.
So called "Classic Plus" should be really called "Classic Scam" because it designed to lift up prices of classic reward and not to release more seats to FF redemption. Unless Qantas offer transparent method to see how many seats when and on what routes been released as "Classic Rewards" and "Classic Scam" I will continue to believe that they simply convert "Classic Rewards" into "Classic Scam". And of course such "method" will NEWER emerges.
Yes I saw a promotional story ran last night on the news with people extolling the virtues of CR Plus seats and what good value it was. I thought clearly the Comms teams are drinking the kool-aid! I look for CR seats but they are like a mirage. Look like they are there at the higher level search and when you get to the flights they have gone.
I’ve been using my qf points on Cathay which has loads of availability. The only flight I could find on qf was chc sydney on emirates a380 first. Otherwise nothing in classic rewards. Not even as platinum. Sigh.

Isn't qantas.com the only way of using qf points to book Cathay flights or is there another way?

Why are we surprised?
The current CE was the Chief Financial Officer to Joyce and would have been involved in every decision he made!
As you correctly pointed out, Classic Plus is just another way to benefit Qantas at the expense of the customer.
