I've kept a set of QF and VA J headphones and regularly use them in economy.

OR... if you fly regularly enough to warrant the price tag, just buy a set of Bose QC25's or the new QC35's (if you want to splash an extra $50-$100 for Bluetooth).
I had a pair of the now superseded QC15's and then upgraded to the QC25's. Best life decision ever. Not 100% effective at blocking out crying babies though.

Don't you need a pillow for that? Or phenergan?

My wife reckons I am already 100% effective at blocking out the sound of a crying baby!

NC headphones provided by the airlines are universally rubbish, I wouldn't keep them even if they gave them away!. Even the $30 ones from aldi are better. I also have invested in the bose qc25"s. they are brilliant except on dragonair where they dont fit the socket.

I always hand over my deluxe solid state hi fidelity headphones prior to landing.

I vote for bringing back the old air head phones. I found that they were more useful to tune old twin carburetors.
I tried with the noise cancelling ones but they did not work :)

I have a friend of a cousin's next door neighbour (cough, splutter) that occasionally collects airline cutlery for nostalgic reasons. Plates are a bit of a stretch. Maybe a plastic (clean) dessert bowl from economy?.
