Have Qantas formally set in a date for the launch of their new premium economy seat for the 787 yet?? In an AUSBT article last year it was suggested to be 'early 2017'?

No official date set, and it's still 'early 2017'. As soon as we have something we can share, we'll do so.

Well, looking at the current crop of premium economy seats they're much of a muchness – a bit wider in the seat, a bit more recline, a bit more storage space, AC/USB sockets. One could argue that the most revolutionary to date has been Air New Zealand's SpaceSeat, which didn't prove quite the hit that AirNZ expected. From what we know of the Qantas Boeing 787 premium economy seat it's quite a bit more 'revolutionary' than that in design.

Want revolutionary? Split PY cabin in 2. Front section, tight but comfortable seats. Back section, bunk bed. 4 bed stacked up high like in a Navy submarine. You choose when you eat, relax or sleep. For me, it would be a good meal in the lounge then off to the bunk bed for the rest of the flight, with a decent arrivals lounge for breakfast/snack upon landing. Lack of privacy is the price you pay for not flying Business. That to me is revolutionary.

David, are you saying from what you've seen the seat will be more revolutionary than the SpaceSeat, or more revolutionary than the generic 'bit wider/more recline' seat employed by other carriers?

I think it'd be fair to suggest that the new Qantas premium economy seat could be more revolutionary than both.

Maybe they are recycling the old Skybed MK I (angled lie-flat) or the old Business 'couch' when VA got their original A330 back 2012 as the new PE, that would be pretty 'Revolutionary'.....although I understand the chance of that happening is the same as Jetstar HK ever takes off.

The PE seat reveal could coincide with the launch of ticket sales for PER-LHR. Indicated timing is similar.

I agree on the bunk bed type scenario, similar to a couchette on the railways in India, 3 people a top each other. There surely is room for this. Restrict cabin baggage to remove the storage bins and lower the floor.
I have thought about this many times when I have travelled in economy for business. The standard look / feel / layout of aeroplanes is a concept based on the trans atlantic 6-8 hour hops. Easy to be there seated. However from our great land we should have something clever and appropriate for the distances we have to travel to get just about anywhere.

Spaceseat as i understand comments from AIR NZ highly successful but simply cant put enough of them in same space as a standard PE seat -

my guess...a fixed shell with a deeper recline/cradle/sleeper seat, with a 40-42inch pitch. An angled lie flat seat will not fit into the allocated cabin space for P/Y, (as per the seat map on Qantas website). I doubt QF would release this seat map if it wasn't indicative of the seat/cabin fixture proportions. Just my opinion of course, and I am looking forward to seeing, hopefully trying the new P/Y in the future. 'Reviews' from other people are nice to read, but I will always reach my own conclusions based on my personal experience :)
