Does anyone have any idea why Qantas is selling their SYD-PEK flights at absurdly low rates? Return in Y is about $400!! It's been like this since the launch.

With prices like this, surely the route is unsustainable?

The Chinese airlines are even cheaper, but QF is very tempting at this price!

I have two theories.

1. Qantas isn't advertising themselves enough in Beijing for Chinese travellers

2. Other airlines are preferred, since Qantas uses an A330 for that route, whereas other airlines use larger aircraft.

Honestly, I'd fly with Cathay or Singapore to Beijing, not Qantas. Qantas just decided to re-open their SYD-PEK route, thinking Australians would want to go to Beijing, where Hong Kong is closer, and has more things to do.

Strange POV - I do not have any urge to fly to China at all and indeed prefer HKG, but it does not mean that other people do not fly China. So I welcome QF to have one more flight to Asia (though I unlikely will ever use it) but of course I rather to have MEL-BKK. But again I cannot get your negative toward QF flying to PEK. And thesis about "larger aircraft" completely lame - refurbished A330 perfectly fine.

Worth noting that the Asia sale also has insanely low rates to Hong Kong, from around $600 return!

I guess it's called competition. Notwithstanding, the fact it's a new route they are obviously trying to put bums on seats. I am not sure the Chinese value a premium product, so they will likely go where the cheapest price points them.

Now having been to China a number of times on business, Beijing would be my least favourite destination...

With the new open agreement, flights to and from China are numerous out of MEL and SYD. It's a highly competitive market, especially in the business sector. Having said that, I know a lot of Australians who are less than enthusiastic about mainland Chinese carriers but obviously they now hold a decent market share in terms of flight numbers that QF are having to compete.

My husband flew business Sydney to Beijing last week and said it was such an old plane he won't do it again!!
