Hi Everyone I am heading to the USA in late December after Christmas for work.  I will be going business either on Qantas or Cathay.

The flight times for the transit are almost identical, 1 has a 6 hour wait in Melbourne the other 6 hours in Hong Kong.
My Perth to Hong Kong leg is overnight on the A350 then a B77W to LA.
The QF overnight to Melbourne in an A332 but the Melbourne to LA will be on the brand new B789.
The lounges in Hong Kong are better than Melbourne but the appeal of the B789 on the long leg to LA over the B77W has me wondering which way to jump.
What does everyone think?

I'd probs go with QF for the sake of experiencing the 787, although I guess if it weren't for that then I'd go with CX.

While the 789 is appealing, what about the return trip ? With QF you could end up on a 737 back to Perth, unfortunately even after you have booked on a scheduled A332.

Split the journey maybe? PER-MEL-LAX with QF to experience their B787 dreamliner product, then come back via HK with CX? That way you get to experience the B787 and A350 jets.

Recommend taking the QF 787 as it will have been Brand New vs Cathay's A350 which reports have it their first batch of deliveries have experienced some hard product failures - unless you get lucky and score one of their refurbished A350's. 1st world problems!

Just a thought - any reason Air New Zealand's not on your list?

Probably the 13 hour layover in Auckland and frequent flyer alliance

Only reason I could think of not considering NZ would be the Oneworld benefits. They're always my Go To.

Thanks for all your replies.  Yep definately want to stay with a One World member due to my QFF status.

Think I will go with the QF Mel-LA routing.

Good choice, bit jealous i don't have any bookings for the QF B787 route in the near future. Enjoy and send us a trip report!

Why not try Emirates and earn more points and SC's! Perth Dubai LAX

No SCs DXB-LAX on EK As I don't think they do a code share on QF on that route? I may be mistaken.

The Qantas red eye to Melbourne is never appealing so I'd be avoiding that, not a good start to a long haul flight.

If I wanted to get to Los Angeles from Perth I would travel with Virgin Australia, via Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne.

I am doing Perth - Los Angeles with Air New Zealand next year.

Considered the points(QFF silver & status) but ANZ won on price for a return business flight
Food for thought
