Hi everyone!
I am flying to Melbourne from Brisbane on friday, and I have heard due to the recent terrorist threats, domestic passengers have to come to the airport 2 hours from departure due to the extensive security checks.
Is this true? Seems a bit long, but if that is what it takes for our safety...
Thanks!

Yeah, turn up a couple of hours early. Wear easy slip off shoes. Enjoy a drink in the lounge which is going to be packed full of people doing exactly the same.

Thank you! I think we will go early no matter what, just is annoying since I live an hour from the airport and it is a 9:00am flight... that means I leave home at 6:00am.

I always go to airport 2 hours earlier anyway. Enjoy the lounge. Now that priority pass can be used in restaurants in BNE and SYD, more reason to go there earlier :)

Virgin are advising 2 hours prior for domestic and 3 for international. Nothing on the SIA site

I am travelling today and the queues are long, but not at the screening points, at QF check in counters who have obviously not got enough staff on early enough to handle all the people turning up 2-3 hours before schedule.

I got to SYD for a domestic flight this morning 9.45am flight, I arrived at 8.00. The queues were quite long compared to normal, but i was through in 10 minutes so sat looking at the dreaded toasties for far too long. When I came back through Sydney at about 1pm there were no queues at all.

Much money is being spent on security at airports and I have no problem with this - but so long as its spent effectively. What's the point of examining little old ladies and children and 99% of the rest of us with the resulting long queues and delays. It would be much more effective to concentrate on those with a record or whose profile matched the criteria for suspect terrorists. I have no concerns with their rights or otherwise.
As to selecting people at random to undergo extra examination for explosives the authorities don't know much about the mathematics of random selection. If they go to the races do they stick a pin in the racing guide or bet on form??
For many years I flew from a small airport at Syracuse in upstate New York and I was ALWAYS singled out for additional examination as I was a foreigner - never mind that I looked like a fairly innocent WASP. I was never concerned about this because at least they had a system and were spending their money more effectively.

The original question was about security delays, not any particular "group" of people. In the current climate, it is very easy to read racial overtones into any flippant remark.
For someone who's job it is, apparently, to police commenting standards, your comment does come across as unprofessional, and your follow up doesn't help.
