I see QR have confirmed they are flying DOH to CWL from May 1 next year. Given that the oldies live in Old South Wales it would be a convenient flight to go to CWL as opposed to LHR e.t.c.
Given I will soon have about 400K in QFF points (Credit card acquired so only bronze status), I would at some point love to fly with QR on a classic rewards booking in business to CWL. I would have thought there would be less competition for business class seats on the DOH CWL leg. Ideally i'd do Business all the way from MEL to CWL but i guess that's where my plan might fail, I guess Classic flight rewards bookings on QR from MEL are hard to get?
CWL isn't even an option on the QFF booking site yet. I guess that might change it time?
What's my chances? I say unlikely but i'd be interested to hear anyone's thoughts.
1. For those who don't speak avgeek, CWL is 'Cardiff', Wales. 2. I'm sure the flights will appear soon and as long as you're avoiding the inaugural and a few days after there should be good availability. Just move fast once the flights appear because Qatar will probably offer very appealing sale prices, even in business class.
I've booked a couple of different reward flights on Qatar (via Qantas) in the last year. Both times they were booked no more than 6-8 weeks out from the date of travel and we were able to secure Business all the way from Europe to Australia which. So in my experience you should be in with a good chance, but I'd still book as early as you can.
To give yourself the best chance be prepared to be flexible on travel dates and even on airports. Ie the first flight I booked we couldn't get into Melbourne so instead we flew into Adelaide and took a short hop over in economy. But it was worth it!
Qatar Business was fantastic, particularly on the A350! So I wouldn't get too caught up if you can't get into Cardiff.
As for booking, call Qantas rather than just waiting to see what's available online. They have access to more flights than you can see and they might be able to put together an itinerary that gets you close to what you want even if its not exactly 100%... in fact this is how we got the flight into Adelaide booked.

Stay Tuned Qatar will start a new Canberra > Doha Service and here they will have FF Seats in all classes .... MEL and SYD are tight for commercial seats so little chance of FF Seats.. Worth the cost of an Airfare to CBR to secure FF seats to Europe.. I hear flights from Adelaide are also much easier to secure FF tickets . Greg Melb...

Is it still the case that the Qantas call centre can see more award seats than we can online? I thought it was, but twice recently (phone and online chat) Qantas has told me that online can see whatever they can. I have my doubts but they specifically stated that.
Booking QR awards online that aren't ex-Australia is impossible - Qantas aren't currently able to charge in Qatari currency via their web channel, hence the problem.

Anyone know if this has been fixed or is it still impossible to book QF rewards on QR ex Doha?
