315SC means a J class to Europe pretty much. The perks of Platinum over gold is significant but I dunno if I’d spend that much money to chase that.

For the lounges I use most, LAX, JFK, SIN and LHR it makes no difference and gold is fine. Just my view and others may differ

So he FLounge in LAX and access to CX F in LHR makes no difference to you?

Excuse my ignorance, what is a "soft landing" back to GOLD?
It means that if you obtain Platinum then fail to retain it you'd drop back to Gold not Bronze. Similarly if you fail to retain Gold you'd drop back to Silver.

So if you know you're unlikely to retain Platinum and have a lot of points saved up and can book well in advance you could try to fly Business for your long haul international flights on classic reward seats rather than book cash fares.

I've never heard of this "soft landing" for Plat and Gold. Is it an unofficial thing?

It may be unofficial but experience of AUSBT shows that that’s what happens.

Pretty use it is how it works, not sure whether it is official tho. Have experience soft landing with QF, VA and EY. (and never had "hard landing")

Thanks, does the soft landing itself get another soft landing? i.e. Plat > Gold > Silver, or is it Plat > Gold > Bronze if you again fail to re-qualify for any status during the soft landing?

Yes, you'd go Plat > Gold > Silver > Bronze.

There has been talk of a 3 year average (if your 3 year average is more SC than what is required to retain) sometimes helping so it's possible you could find you go Plat > Gold > Gold > Silver > Bronze but you certainly can't count on that.

Recently QF has been known to sometimes offer for example a long time Gold member that fell a little short to retain Gold for another year if they're willing to part with e.g. 80,000 points.

Some savvy members will level up to Platinum at the start of their membership year on a Double Status Credits offer, giving them Platinum for nearly two years, drop down to Gold for a further year and then once they've dropped down to Silver quickly level up to Platinum again trying to do most of their travel (apart from when they are levelling up to Platinum) on classic reward seats using points.

315 status credits is quite a bit and should cost you few thousdands ($$) to achieve.
I do not think it is warranted (I’m QF and VA Platinum). The lounge difference is good, but at what cost for you.
If this was more like 50 status credits are under, may be you could (or i could) justify it.
Airlines usually appreciate passengers paying/flying business class or first class than their loyal customers (not saying, it is all the time, but most of the time). There are very few situations where loyal customers get more than full fee paying passengers.

Don’t need a few thousands. Get yourself to Bali first than Bali-Kuala Lumper return trip 3 times will get you 360 status credit=900 AUD.

Remember your SCs still go toward your Lifetime Silver/Gold status. 315 SCs are a lot but if you are travelling overseas after you get Platinum may be worth it. Domestic flights not worth it.

BNE-SYD-DPS return in J will get you 320SC and a nice weekend in Bali. Access to OW first lounges would make Platinum worthwhile.
