Avoiding extra Qantas points for a multi-trip award booking - Qantas & Jetstar

Hi there,

Am looking to book a flight to London, there is no availability on the day i request (business class) but if i book a flight to Kuala Lumpur with MH on my desired date (arriving in the late evening), I can book a flight leaving approx 9AM on the next day with MH again through to London (All business class).

However this costs more points which is annoying....

MEL -> KUL = 65K points (Arrive KL 8:30PM)

KUL-> LHR = 92K points (Depart KUL next day at 9:50 AM)

Total = 157K points

A MEL->KL redemption if available is usually 139K points.

Is there a way to book this without having to pay the extra 18K points?

I assume not but thought someone more savvy than I might have a trick up their sleeve.

If you're flexible you could look for availability on surrounding dates.

Were you able to get seats on MH 128 on the same date which departs at night which will connect with the 9am KUL-LHR flight. This might come up as an option.

It may be related to the recent Qantas glitch where multi-city bookings are being priced separately rather than one journey.

If you're positive you're following all the rules (including less than 24 hours as transit in KUL), then the best advice is to call Qantas, explain the points discrepancy, and ask them to book it correctly while waiving the phone service fee.

My understanding is that this has been going on for a couple of weeks without resolution.

Thanks to all for your replies. Much appreciated.

Sadly, not long after posting, the seat from KUL to LHR disappeared so that avenue is dead for now. For the MEL>KUL leg There was no availability on MH128 also otherwise I would have jumped on that one.

Interesting note on the rules, where do I find these rules? Thanks!
