I am looking to book a one way ticket from Perth - New York (via Dubai) with Emirates in first class.
I was hoping to travel in the month of October this year. I found that if I search "Perth - New York" on the Qantas website, there are no available first class seats on the date I want. However, if I searched the flights separately, "Perth - Dubai and Dubai - New York". There is full availability on each leg every single day of the month!
The issue I have is that by separating the flights, qantas charge nearly an extra 42,000 points per person for the whole trip, even though the stopover in Dubai is less than 24 hours.
I was wondering if I called Qantas, will they be able to sell me these award tickets as one trip rather than seperate so I save the 42,000? Or has qantas done this deliberately to get more points off us?

Hi - how did you go with the phone call? I'm interested to know the outcome of this as it seems unusual.
I have had similar experience when booking SYD-DXB-JFK. I just used the multi-city search function to piece it all together, and it charged me the correct amount (192k in the above example).
Do you have any status with Qantas. I would ring Qantas and ask them.
I checked after logging in with my account and there were seats available on business on Qatar Airways for 139,000 points in early October this year.
My apologies as you were looking at First Class. I checked doing a PER-JFK one way routing and was getting seats on EK with connections in Dubai with a few hours for 192k.
