We're planning a trip from MEL to Singapore and onwards to Yangon. We're Gold on Velocity, and will likely be booking premium economy, with a view to try for an upgrade to biz on points (we've got lots...). Some help please: Which would be more advantageous - booking direct with SQ or via VA codeshare?
You can't upgrade a VA (codeshare) or SQ ticket with VA points, you can't upgrade a VA ticket with SQ points, you CAN upgrade an SQ ticket with SQ points.
If you want to upgrade, you need to ensure you're booked directly on SQ tickets in the correct fare class. If you have SQ points to upgrade with, great! If you have VA points, you need to transfer them to a KrisFlyer account, and then apply for the upgrade.
I’m not sure how correct this is but when I tried booking Singapore Airlines premium economy flights as a VA codeshare, I was told by my travel agent that there is no VA codeshare for premium economy classes on SQ. Only business and economy have VA codeshares...apparently.
Hmm tricky. If I use the KF points to upgrade, that would mean that my KF number is associated with the flight, and I won't get Velocity points/status at all. If I'm not mistaken, points can be transferred, but not status credits. Might need to be satisfied with PE and get the status credits.

This is not correct - you can still get Velocity points/status credits.
Your booking initially needs to be with your KF number - but once you have your upgrades confirmed and new tickets issued in the upgraded class, you can call SQ/change on web booking/updated at airport and get it swapped back to your VA FF number.
That is what I did for flights last year when we went to CBR-LHR and AMS-CBR, and upgraded using KF points (originally transferred points from Velocity) to upgrade to business class using points from flexi/premium mixed fair. I had no issue getting status credits or points directly credited to VA once the number was swapped back, after the upgrades had been confirmed - based of course on the initial fare category booked.

This wouldn't surprise me.. You can't book SQ award flights in PE through Velocity (same for Alitalia also FYI).
