It’s probably because the KUL/SYD and SYD/MEL flights are married segments. If that’s the case, the KUL/SYD seat is only available in conjunction with the other flight and not available individually.

Is getting off at Sydney and missing the Melbourne flight an option?

Maybe the person you spoke to didn't know what to do. If you have only spoken to that one person I would call back and try again. Please let us know how you go.

I’ve also asked this question before as I’ve tried to book the flight from KUL-MEL and could only see the routes via SYD or ADL or BNE. And this KUL-MEL flight is only offered if I fly to other cities, which means more points are needed (65k vs 81k). Didn’t have time to call Qantas yet. It would be nice if Ausbt could get in touch with Qantas and ask whether this is just a glitch or an intention.

Thanks for the insight everyone :)
I ended up booking the route for 81,000 points (+ 8,000 for a short regional flight to where I need to be), because my travel is next week and needed to lock in the business class seat.
So unfortunately abandoning the rest of the journey at Sydney isn't an option jch.
However, I'll give Qantas another ring tonight and see if they can explain the issue, as well as change my flights so I can go straight from Sydney to my final destination, rather than via Melbourne. Hopefully I would get a 16,000 point refund as well as some taxes.

Readers are welcome to raise their own complaints with airlines via the appropriate channels, but this isn't something journalists assist with.

I’ve had a similar issue in the past when trying to book LAX to SYD.

While it doesn't fix the initial problem, I was able to correct my itinerary after booking by calling up. They removed the unnecessary SYD-MEL leg and repriced it. Change fee waived since it falls under their 'same day mistake' policy.
