Hi team

Please help. I am currently a SQ Silver Krisflyer member. I need another few thousand points by Feb to retain this level of membership otherwise I'll go down.
I am scheduled to fly Melbourne to Singapore return in Feb anyways. Now here's my dilemma
- Qantas is running an A380 service that I really want to fly.
- But if I fly SQ I'll get to keep my Silver membership.

Price is more or less the same for both.
Krisflyer Silver membership hardly comes with any benefits to be honest. No lounge access, priority check-in/boarding or other tangible benefits. Though I do use my Krisflyer points to fly on their partner airlines like AirVistara or Virgin Australia.

Any suggestions on which one I should go for?  Please help!!

I'd suggest that you should fly Singapore to retain your silver status, unless you have a really compelling reason to fly on the QF A380 which you haven't detailed? Some status is better than no status.

Agree. Personally I think if you’re only going to be able to build up status with one global alliance then you may as well stick with that. I guess if you will struggle to retain silver star alliance then maybe go with the cheapest option. I’m guessing from your post that you’re going in economy? If so then not a lot to choose probably in terms of product. If business, then I’d be choosing SQ.

Also noting that Singapore Airlines also has the A380 (and A350) on it's February schedules for Melbourne - if that is the sole reason why you are contemplating Qantas.

If you're okay to fly any A380 then, you could always fly MEL-SYD-SIN on VA then SQ's A380 flight from Sydney to Singapore.

Something like MEL-SYD (VA) SYD-SIN (SQ) and SIN-MEL (SQ) can be booked on a single ticket and only adds $100 extra compared to flying direct.

If you're traveling to the US then Star Alliance Silver gives premier access on United otherwise it's quite pointless.

Perhaps a different view point - you could always look at flying SQ but credit to VA? Least you'd likely bump through to Gold relatively quickly and maybe even Plat? Good access/benefits with SQ, but obviously drop off bookings with others.

+1 to this idea. If you are going to be flying a bit in the future, its easier to get VA Gold than Krisflyer Gold, and the benefits on Singapore are about the same.

Seems like most replies are leaning towards SQ and/or retaining some status level. As someone wisely pointed out: "having some status is better than no status". I've found this to be so true. When starting out a few years back, even lowly silver status on certain airlines made a huge difference. I was - on different occasions when flying economy - able to get preferred seating, extra baggage allowance, and two or three upgrades. Not a lot, but it helped me. Nowadays I'm fortunate to fly business more often, where most benefits are included. But I still look back and count myself lucky in the beginning for having at least some status. Or look at it another way: the a380 will be around for at least another decade or two for you to fly. But status is fleeting and should be utilized/obtained whenever the opportunity comes up!

Hi everyone,

Thanks heaps for all your help. I have decided to go with SQ and retain silver status.

I'm gold with Qantas but I still voted SQ! Guess that's saying something. I which virgin would offer Gold transfer... I'd switch tomorrow and start booking all my business trips on VA/SQ.

SQ.I might only be a red level at velocity but earn points with them filling the car petrol and at one time car servicing at midas(I am now sadly on a caped price service plan with Holden)since trading up which places like that are no more.that aside SINGAPORE ARE THE BETTER carrier.

SQ all the way. We credit to VA. You can maintain gold with one MEL-SIN-HKG return in J and four VA paid domestic flights. It's too easy.

Sounds like someone needs to propose a status challenge to VA 😁

SQ a far superiour to QF. Further when it comes to using your points Krisflyer has far more availability than QF.
