I usually fly Virgin from the US as I'm a VA platinum but I'm flying Qantas this month as I was able to jag a business award flight from LAX. I have to connect from JFK and am flying AA economy on a separate reservation. Am I able to access the AA lounge in JFK as I have a same day Qantas business ticket?
They depend on whether you have a =boarding pass= for a OneWorld trans-continental is intercontinental business class flight that departs on the same day, regardless of what your connecting flight is.
You need to be able to check in online and show your QF boarding pass in order to access the lounge in NY.
Do not count on AA to check you in to your Qantas flight if it is on a different booking.
Of course, initiating your travel on QF from JFK would have negated the question of lounge access at JFK completely, even if you were connecting from another East Coast USA city such as Boston, Washington - but I would assume that there are multiple reasons that such a choice wasn't possible? ie: lack of required AA/QF points, lack of award availability on QF ex JFK, pre-purchased revenue ticket JFK-LAX etc?

Right, I could get the award flight from LAX but not JFK.

I suspect not as lounge access is based on the forthcoming flight. If you have QF gold or above yes but otherwise no.
